First-Time Water Test & Some Questions

I'm about to convert the pool to SWG (Circupool RJ60+). I had very high CyA and had fresh water trucked in, replacing about 2/3 of the pool water. Here are my test findings from a Taylor K-2006 test kit and a few added reagents:

CyA = 45 ppm
Free Cl = 2.6 ppm
Combined Cl = 0.4
pH = 7.8
Total Alkalinity = 140
Calcium = ~90 ppm
TDS = 487
Salt 200 ppm (before adding anything)

I am now adding some salt to the pool and waiting for it to dissolve before retesting to get a baseline before adding more. Goal is 3500 ppm.

My question is, is the pH and Total Alkalinity too high and need to be adjusted, or should I leave it for now?

Other than that, what do you think?

Thanks in advance.

I would first increase the FC with liquid chlorine to about 6-7 ppm to avoid algae. Algae is the last thing you need right now. Tonight, do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test just to ensure you pass before adding stabilizer to increase the CYA closer to the 60-70 range for the SWG.

As for the pH and TA, when the pH hits 8.0, use enough acid to lower the pH to about 7.2, then let it rise naturally. Repeat once the pH hits 8.0. Each time you do that it will lower the TA a bit. Once the TA gets down to about 60-70 you should be in good shape.

For FC - use 10 mL sample with one heaping scoop of 0870. Then each drop of 0871 is worth 0.5. You don't really need to know the more precise values afforded by the 25 mL sample and it'll save you on reagents.

Okay. I missed Reggie's post and I didn't quite get the level up to 6ppm, but the results of the OCLT are:

Last Night @ 7:30 PM FC = 5.6

This Morning @ 7:00 AM FC = 5.4

So, I should be good to go?

After 7 bags of salt I'm up to about 2400ppm. Another 3 or 4 bags should get me to my target.

Great! We should be able to rule out algae and you can increase your CYA as needed to the recommended CYA of about 70 to help your SWG work more efficiently. Stay on the pH control and you should do well.
