I am new to this forum and wanted to know what normal plumbing is supposed to look like. I have two different pool professionals telling me two different things. We currently have above ground PVC piping, however the piping just above the ground and below about one foot is a piece of copper piping which I'm told then transitions back to PVC. Is this normal? Also, I'm being told that the best route is to dig below the ground and change the copper out to PVC. Thoughts?

Hi there, welcome to TFP :)

I can't imagine anyone using copper pipes these days on purpose?!?!
If its in there now and you're not having a problem with copper stains to your pool surface, you can do one of the following:
1- change it now to avoid potential future copper problems.
2- wait to change it whenever you have to dig up the ground to fix pipes
3- ignore it if it isn't causing you problems? Don't let your pH bottom out or you risk copper degradation quicker into the water.

How old is the pool? Mine is about 40 years. That long ago many codes required the pipe above ground and going into the ground to the first fitting to be copper, as mine is. The rest is PVC. Forty years, no problems. No need to make the change unless there is a problem. Keep your chems and water speed in check and you won't have a problem (very fast water from a pump that is too large can strip copper pipes from the inside).
No need to create a problem that's not really there.
