Water level check. More debris than usual floating on top of water.

I came back from vacation and noticed that a bit of debris on the top of the pool. It's usually crystal clear.

  • Cleaned the cartridge filters and baskets.
    • The filters were filthy, not sure when they were cleaned properly. Cleaned them about an hour ago.
  • Pump and returns appear strong.
  • Pool vacuum is working normal.
  • Checked the UFO thing under the skim basket and there is suction.
  • Compared water level in skimmer and it seems similar level to what it was a few weeks ago.
I read that the most common issue is the water level when it comes to skimming. I have an automatic pool filler, but never adjusted the level before (and don't know how). Water level seems similar to what it was before when comparing a skimmer pic I took a few weeks ago.

Are there any recommendations?

It doesn’t have one, never did as far as I can tell.

It really won't work very well without it. Water flows in and the flapper keeps floating items in the skimmer compartment. You need to get one. Perhaps your builder knows what model skimmer.

BTW: Water level is typically 1/2 way up the skimmer so it looks good but again, without the flapper door, you are losing a lot of skimmer action.

I think I've identified the skimmer door replacement part. Apparently the hinges break easily so after it broke the previous owner never replaced it. Thanks guys.

I bought the replacement flap, but the holes where the tabs go in are blocked off by the pool cement. There is very little lip for those tabs to snag into. Seems like there should've been a hole/pocket drilled out for them. Is that normal or did the builder not install it right? It's really hot outside so I gave up trying to put in. Also, the styrofoam made it even more challenging.

Here is the replacement part, for an example of the little tabs (one is spring loaded):

I was able to get the flap installed this morning, it was just tricky hooking in the retractable tab. Hopefully that helps, thanks guys.

Cal,

Since the weir door is new to you, please keep in mind that it should "float" up and down as the water level changes. If you suddenly see a problem where your skimmer gets sucked dry, and then your pump runs out of water, and then the skimmer quickly fills with water, and this just keeps repeating, then the door is stuck up. It should not happen, but just a heads up if it does.

Thanks,

Jim R.

The skimmer does have a Float Valve, but the O-ring is missing on the bottom of the skimmer and the valve itself has a deformed o-ring. Ordered replacements for those, so hopefully that mitigates a possible issue, like if the auto-fill mechanism fails.
Can you post a pic?
Looks like it's working now, see the attached pics. Hope the door stays in.

I've been raising the water to try to get it closer to middle.

I'm wondering how to get more of the small particles filtered. I ordered hair nets to put in the basket so I can pull out the basket and pull that stuff up when I lift up the basket. I believe there has been an animal (opossum I suspect) in my baja because there have been maggots showing up there in the morning. I put a motion sensing owl there last night that lights up and hoots and there were only a few maggots there this morning.

Your filter should filter everything that makes it through the skimmer basket. Some people do use a skimmer sock as a pre-filter though.

Can you list a full set of tests too?

Something like this should work for socks.

I noticed stuff floating on the top of basket and thought it was just hanging out there.

This was driving me crazy, but I think I figured it out finally. There appeared to be air in the system as I couldn't get the pump to fully prime without bubbles. I disconnected the suction side plumbing and lubed the o-rings, the ones I can access at least. Put it back together. The skimmer basket vortex was much stronger and the vacuum is even working at 1100 RPM which it never did before.
