Black + Decker Pool Pumps any good?

I am looking to replace a pool pump with a variable speed, and noticed Black + Decker has an option that is half the price of Hayward/Pentair. Does anyone have any experience with these? I was looking at the 3hp model. I believe they have a 2year warranty.

The 3hp is $100 more. I have a 12000 gal pool.

It’s made by Asia Connection LLC, which imports most products from China and it also makes Blue Torrent Pumps. They are also Island Recreational.

can confirm they’ve been here a year longer than me since the mid 70s. Way back when lots of folks by me would take the hour or so trip to get discount/generic chemicals from them. Now we have Leslies and everybody else but back then it was only designer chems at the mom and pop stores.

Feel free to take the calculated risk with their lesser known *anything they sell*. On one hand, the pump and/or filter is the backbone of your pool. On the other hand that doesn’t make your available funds any more for the designer stuffs. It’s entirely possible to get just as good longevity at a much better price.

It’s a gamble.

If it has a problem right away, the seller should replace it.

If it has a problem after a few months, then the warranty process will probably be so complicated and annoying that you would be better off buying a new pump.

Hayward, Pentair and Jandy will probably have an authorized service/warranty center nearby that can provide warranty service, especially if you buy it from an authorized retailer.

Amazon lists 3 models.

Is it worth the risk?

Only you can decide.

A rebate might be available, but that usually requires a qualified installer.

The qualified installer might want you to buy the pump from them and have them install it.

You might be able to purchase and install the pump and then find a local service person to come out and “Install” the pump by doing nothing more than verifying the installation and charging a nominal service call fee.

The installer might not need to be a pool person.

The qualified installer might be anyone who has a business license authorized to install such equipment.

Maybe a local handyperson who will charge $50.00 to “install” the pump and give you a receipt.

Maybe leave the bond wire undone for the service person to connect to qualify as an “installation”.

Earn a rebate up to $350 when you install an ENERGY STAR certified pool pump for a residential in-ground pool or spa and save more than $2,800 in energy costs over its lifetime.

Check with your utility for rebate availability and terms and conditions.

This is the same pump, also made by Asian Connection. A couple hundred dollars cheaper for the 3 HP model, but only one-year warranty.

  • Paid receipt/invoice (proof of purchase)
  • Photo of the installed pool pump showing the ENERGY STAR label.

The Calimar does not look like it has the EnergyStar sticker, which might be required for the rebate.
I looked it up on the Energy Star site to confirm the manufacturer was the same. It's showing as Energy Star certified.

I believe so. Take look at the Energy Star website. This page shows all 3.0 HP pumps from Asia Connection under different brand names including Calimar, Circupool and B&D. You can select and compare the different pumps and all will show identical specs. Then search each pump individually and compare photos and owners manuals (if you can find them). You'll see identical diagrams, part numbers, and language.

One positive note is that there are parts available for the Calimar Pump (click the parts tab), including a new drive and motor. If things go wrong, you might be able to repair the pump.

Yes, repair parts are a definite plus. Will probably order a few gaskets and unions with the pump.

18,000 gallon, swg & NG heater(no other bells or whistles), single 1 1/2" from pool, single 1 1/2" return as well. Just replaced 1hp SS super pump(10 years old) with B&D 2.0 over the weekend. Installation went as various videos describe, and the pump works as described. I am giving the 230volts no timed control, swg is on old mechanical timer and set to run 30 minutes before and after the pump cycle. It appears from my initial experimentation the SWG flow switch is satisfied at 1250 rpm. NG heater looks to be closer to 1850 ish(new flow switch). I will report my final program schedule after I run for a week or two. BTW you can find the Blue Torrent (Blue Works) cheaper than Poolpart.com but I went with them (decent Dad's day coupon) to secure Black & Decker's 5-year warranty. My challenge with replumbing (not a direct plug & play) was getting clearance for the spring-loaded door that covers the control panel, I also extended the pipe before the pump to aid priming as instructions advise. I also had to lower the clean cycle speed to 2950 as the default was too high (a good thing) as my energy usage even at that speed is a fraction of the Hayward ss. Day 3 very satisfied. More to come.

I installed my 1 1/2 HP B&D a month ago (May 24, 2022). Thoroughly pleased with performance. Extremely quiet, have to touch it at 1000rpm to see if it’s running. I replaced a single speed with this VSP so I can’t really compare it to a different brand of VSP. Install was very easy, matched up to the Hayward that I removed. I run it 10 hrs at 1000rpm, 2 hrs at 2800, 10 hrs 1000 and 2 hrs 2800. I get plenty of skimming action at 1000 rpm’s just bump it to 2800 rpm’s in case of extra debris. My Hayward SS was not on a timer so it ran 24/7 all summer, this programmable VSP has been a nice addition. My Hayward was still working fine but I saw the B&D for a good price and decided it was time to upgrade. Now I have a backup If needed. So far so good.

I ordered the 3HP online and waiting for it to get delivered. I am excited about my first variable speed pump, I hope this last at least for the warranty period of 5 years :)
