Cutting the cord-anybody else?

I/we pay for Cox cable TV and gig internet. I have to be able to watch live sports. I/we have the major streaming services. I refuse to calculate what I pay in monthly tv watching. I don’t want to know how much money I’m wasting. I already know it’s a lot. Worse yet, when we do watch tv, other than sports, it’s prime time from 8 to 11 pm.

Big tv costing big money is right… LG 77” OLED. We had the pre-wire surround sound as part of our new home build. We definitely enjoy many of the streaming movies, we have no desire to go to a theatre.

We have a 3 year old 65 inch sony that was almost top of the line and $3k. We got a $700 vizeo from BJs for the finished basement when we moved. I liked the picture so much i got a 2nd one for the bedroom. The Sony is still better by a hair but unnoticable 98% of the time. Certainly not $2300 worth.

The cheapo TVs have made up alot of ground recently. I could always spot the differences from across the store, now i have to stuggle to see any in my house day after day.

I bought a 55” spectre to put outside on my covered deck for $250. Figured if it lasted a couple years worth it. 3rd year and still going strong :) It’s covered good but was concerned with the moisture and heat

Every tv in my house is under $300. I never watched much tv until covid . I was never even home that much. I think I've watched more the past 2 years than my whole life. Lucky for me, I have no idea what an expensive tv looks like.

Until 2020 I had never purchased a tv on my own outright. I had a tube one that my husband bought me when we were dating
In 2000 in my bedroom & it got replaced by a plasma I found on the side of the road.
For years we had one of those giant big screens in our living room that someone gave us. We had to put dielectric grease in the connectors when it would go on the fritz 🤣
It started getting darker & darker so my parents gifted us a 42” flatscreen for our 25th/26th birthdays.
Until January when I purchased one for our playroom we only ever had 2 tvs in our house. So I guess I’ve got about $500 total lifetime investment in tvs. We’ll see how long these newfangled jobs last. Hoping for another 20 good years 🤣

I am humbled, that is some serious return on investment right there. Well done. Need to have vs nice to have!!

Same here. We put an 85" in our finished basement and we watched a bunch of "new" movies over the last two years for the $19.99 when it was in the theatre and for four of us it was way cheaper than going to the theater. We had our popcorn could pause to hit the restroom and our surround sound with Atmos now gives us a real good experience. My kids got to watch all the Marvel movies on disney + and that took a months watching one or two a week. Zero.zero desire to go to the theatre ever again. The way people act in the theater and treat these places with Crud all over the floor, spilled drinks, etc etc its a Dang shame. None of that in our home!!

My issue with Alexa is sometimes the outlets lose connectivity. Nothing like getting all settled in bed and asking her to turn off the light and nothing happens. :(

-Oh and to my defense, the only reason we are using this is that the on/off knob on that lamp is stripped and I have been too lazy to replace it. ;)
It’s funny when you tell her to turn off a light and she does while telling you she doesn’t know what that device is or just turned it on 30 minutes ago. I have been known to tell Siri “ you just turned it on bozo”

Speaking of weighs a ton... My oldest son was really into video games and when he started earning his own money he invested heavily in his hobby. Apparently "serious" gamers like using flat screen tube TVs or monitors to play the older systems the the SEGA or SNES, since older game systems weren't designed to be played on high def screens. My son bought a couple of retired medical CRT monitors that are encased in steel frames and weigh about 100,000,000 pounds. One was 26" and the other was 20". Guess what stayed in my house when he moved to Japan? When I sell the house it will be included gratis. I have no idea how he got it up the stairs. Along the same vein, I also have 7 or 8 old school TVs of assorted size and age that were accumulated for the same purpose. Getting rid of a CRT around here is like trying to get rid of spent plutonium. No body wants it and it you try to dump it somewhere they will track you down and make you take it back!
