When my PB was out a couple weeks ago he sounded certain that a retaining wall would be necessary because of the slope toward my house. However, if I'm reading this survey right then the NE corner of the concrete (Top right) decking would be at 333.8 ft which is about 6 feet away from the 335 ft line. In other words, wouldn't that mean a retaining wall of about 12" max? Is that even necessary? There is plenty of room in my inexperienced opinion to grade those 12 inches away from the decking. I was also planning on putting about 18" width of river rock around the decking and I could put a drain in there to redirect any water.

I should also mention that since he was here I moved the pool 10 ft to the east (Right in the picture) and about 3 or 4 ft closer to the house. Not sure if that made a difference.

Well, you may get some people who insist you need a retaining wall but it wont be me. I'd say my slope was more severe than yours and I didn't build one.

I see almost 2 feet of wall being needed at the spot it is drawn right now. Of course if you have enough land behind you could grade and not do the wall... but you will have to be sure to handle the grade properly and have drainage dealt with not to dump the water into the pools and deck area.

I’m curious how you’re coming up with at least 2 ft. If concrete elevation is at 334 and it ends at 335 isn’t that only a foot of wall?

I saw the bottom right corner of the deck at the 332 line and the top right section of the retaining wall is near the 335 mark. But hard to tell... either way if you have enough space to handle the drop with a slope you wouldn't "need" the retaining wall.
