First pool Tampa area - Plumbing question

a 1.5 HP for the water features (2 bowls, 2 deck jets and 1 sheer decent...the sheer decent is 4 feet wide).
I would do a 3 hp variable speed pump so that you can control the flow.

Or just eliminate the extra pump and use the filer pump.

For reasonable projection, the sheer should get about 12 gpm per foot or about 48 gpm for 4 feet.

For suction, you want to keep the water velocity below 6 ft/sec.

For returns, you want to keep the water velocity below 8 ft/sec.

Size.......6 ft/sec......8 ft/sec.

1.5"...........38...............51 gpm

2"..............63...............84 gpm

2.5............90.............119 gpm

3.0".........138.............184 gpm

4”...........234.............313 gpm

If you use a separate pump, you should install a filter after the pump to keep debris out of the sheer.

The slit is thin and it can get clogged with debris, which can be difficult to clean out.

A Sheer Descent filter/strainer (p/n 3456), or equivalent, must be installed on the return side of the pump, between the pump and the waterfall.

Refer to Figure 11.

FILTER IS REQUIRED for separate pump installations, as large debris must not be allowed to enter the waterfall unit.

For installations requiring up to 60 gallons (227 l) per minute, use one Sheer Descent filter/strainer.

For higher water requirements, use two or more filters plumbed in parallel.

The 1.5hp is already installed so I think at this point I'll have to see what it looks like if my bowls ever show up and get installed, lol. The model number for the 1.5hp is 342002. The model number for the 3hp is 011056. So I need a filter in addition to the one that is on the pump?

In my opinion, the Intelliflo would have been a better choice than the Superflo for the water features.

Or, just eliminate the extra pump and run the features off of the main pump.

You need a filter after the pump and before the sheer descent.

James. @JamesW for clarity - if you do not have the water feature pump with its own suction, will @TampaKathy be able to run the bowls when in Spa Mode? My understanding is that the dedicated pump with suction allows the water feature to operate in either Pool or Spa mode. Or is there a way to plump it differently if you only have 1 pump?

No. In Spa mode, the water features won't work with a single pump.

If you want them to work in Spa mode, you would need the extra pump.

You could also have separate equipment for the Pool and Spa if you were going to use the Spa a lot.

You can share the heater but you would need separate pumps and filters.

So, it would make more sense to have a pool pump and filter and a spa pump and filter with the shared heater or you could do separate heaters if you wanted.

With separate equipment, you can run the features and the spa at the same time.

You can also do separate equipment with a separate water feature pump.

So, you have several options depending on what you want to do.

What did you get to measure gallons? I will eventually be filling ours from our well too.
This is what I used but it didn't occur to me until the night before I needed it to see what the max gallons was that it could measure...it's 999.9, lol. So I'm pretty much going to be figuring out the pool gallons based on time. I've checked it after an hour a few times to make sure it is maintaining the same flow rate (it is) so I'll figure out the total once I see how many hours it takes to fill.
