Help with pool light

Hello,

I've just recently moved into this house with a pool. I noticed the pool light doesn't turn on. I assume the bulb is burnt out. I asked my pool guy about it and he had recommended to replace the complete housing with wiring all the way to the pool service panel because it is the original light housing (I think) from when the pool was built back in 1997. Before I had asked him I was just going to open the housing and change the bulb and maybe put a new gasket and cover. He advised against that as he said it will likely leak. Anyways I don't have my pool guy anymore. I'm looking for your opinions. Also looking to upgrade to an LED bulb. Give me your suggestions please.

You don't know what you are going to find until you take out the pool light.

From your ex-Pool Guys point of view it is less expensive for him and probably you to just replace it on the first trip.

You can give replacing the bulb and gasket a try and see what state the light fixture is when you get it open. Worst case you will end up replacing it if it has corrosion or leaks.

It’s definitely possible to change the bulb and gasket. I prefer the silicone gaskets they make. If the gfci isn’t tripping most likely it’s just a burned out bulb. If it is most likely you have water in it. But you would have to pull it out and see. Even with water and no corrosion, you can dry it out and put a good gasket on. As for recommendations it depends if it’s a halogen, incandescent, the size of the pool and desired lumens.

Thanks, I'll open up the light and take a look. Seems easy enough to do. That pentair intellilight looks pretty cool, not cheap tho lol.

Forum recommended FL Sun Seeker resin-filled LED light would be my recommendation. Great service - answered all my questions and many here report much longer life than the Pentair products.

That one looks like a great option. May be better to just switch it out with one of these. Thanks for the recommendation!

If your pool lights haven't been touched since 1997 , there is a good chance you have no chance to get the screw out of the fitting. I tried to change my halogen lights out and both light fixtures the screws had to be drilled out. Hope you have better luck.
