Can’t get any free chlorine reading

OK! So even though the minimum for the FC is 2, with a cya of 30, to be on the safe side my target should be 4 while I’m learning
Noooooooo. Minimum is a cliff that you never want to look over. Not while you’re new. ‘Target range’ is designed to allow 24 hours of regular daily FC loss and still be above minimum.

As a beginner, especially with only a few weeks left in your season, I’d aim for 8. You can lose the 3ppm today that is about average and still be smack in the middle of target range with 5ppm left. And have 3 ppm to spare before the minimum (NEVER EVER EVER) 2.

OK, so for a CYA of 30 the minimum FC is 2, but I should keep my target at 4 because I am a newbie right?
Also the minimum pH is 7.2 but my target is 7.6- 7.8 or I would correct it is that right?
When would I test my other levels? And is it best to check the chlorine in the morning or at night when I’m not slamming?
Thanks 🥳

Sorry, that was a double post. Thanks for the explanation. NEVER 2. Got it.
The pH I should keep an ideal range though? And I’m assuming I just checked the other levels maybe once a week?

Never EVER ever ever EVER

Any 7.x is fine for vinyl 99 out of 100 times. Be ready to adjust it as it swings out of the 7s.

Calcium (CH) pretty much doesn’t matter for vinyl. Test it at the beginning of the season. Get 100 in there and forget about it.

CYA won’t go anywhere so check that monthly just to be sure you are using the right ranges for FC.

So I just checked my pH and it’s 8.2 by the box. Should I add muriatic acid? According to Pool Math to 7.6?
Is the FC under 10 ? If not you have to wait. If yes then lowering to 7.6 is great with MA. Remember to brush good as it’s heavier than water and might puddle up on the floor.

No the FC right now is 11.5, when the FC is under 10 by tomorrow I’ll re-check the pH again if it’s still high then I’ll bring it down to 7.6 with muriatic acid.

You’d be surprised how many people went through what you just did, won the battle, and came back a month or two later. ‘I kept seeing my FC was 1, but the water was looking good so I didn’t worry about it. Now it’s a swamp’. :brickwall::brickwall::brickwall::brickwall::brickwall:

Ooh! No way. I promise I will NOT let that happen. Chlorine is my new bestie 😂

We trained you. You took the advanced course and graduated early with full honors. A SLAM will do that and by the end, you have earned your pro status at the school of hard knocks.

Look at you slinging test bottles like it’s nothing!!!! (Because it’s really pretty easy….. but that’s not the point here).

So, the rest is up to you. :) But ask away annnnnnnnnnnnytime you have a need.

So if I test it in the morning and my goal is 8 and it’s 7, then do I put in enough to make up the difference between seven and eight on the Pool Math?
Yes, your goal is 8 and just bring it back to that from wherever it's at when you test with poolmath. So you know there's minimum, there's target and for you we created GOAL. Minimum is never, target is in a month from now and goal is for you to get used to pool care.

How often does everyone check TA? Is that something that’s tested regularly?
thanks 🌸

TA isn't something you're checking all the time if it's relatively at a decent level. If it's somewhat high it'll come down a bit every time you lower the PH with MA. Usually once the TA is good you'll have less big PH rise. Each pool has its own tendencies. Once every 4 weeks is plenty.
