Can’t get any free chlorine reading

Thanks so much! But you guys rock! I’m only doing what you teach me
99% of it is you listening and not fighting us tooth and nail trying to keep doing what didn’t work for you, usually because ‘the professionals’ got you some reallllllllly bad habits.

Take your bow. This is on you. 😁

Is that a big jump for a day
Kinda sorta. Is the TA still high ? It will cause the PH to rise quickly, but forget the TA part as it will lower itself as you knock down the PH everytime it hits 8.
Do you think I should check my pH and my TA again tonight
Yes. Get a new TA in your logs and the. Check it weekly just because. Check your PH every day for now with the FC because it’s so simple to do.

*as a side note, looking at your logs gives me the warm and fuzzies. You. Hit. It. HARD. Stupid hard. If only everyone listened like you things would be awsomesauce all the time.

When I checked it today though, the pH was up to 7.8 from 7.5 yesterday. Is that a big jump for a day? Do you think I should check my pH and my TA again tonight?
pH will rise pretty quickly with that level of TA. Just test pH every few days and add acid as necessary. As stated before, test your TA whenever you need to lower pH. The TA value is needed in Poolmath to instruct you how much acid to add to lower the pH.

My question tonight is about my filter cartridge. The psi on our pump this year my husband thinks the baseline was about 14 and it’s been running at 18. I’ve cleaned the cartridge it a few times; the first couple times had that blue slimy stuff that I was told was most likely copper and we took care of that. The last time I took it out it was just slightly dirty and discolored grayish color; I use the hose with a very strong squirter attachment in between every pleat but I can’t figure out why the psi doesn’t go down after I clean the filter.
I was planning on deep cleaning it at the end of the year since it’s only maybe a month away, just wondering what you guys used to deep clean a cartridge filter.
thanks 😊

The easiest is dishwasher soap. Toss it in a warm bucket of water with a cascade pod and it will probably be good in the morning, after a thorough rinse.

Next up is a TSP bath (tri-sodium-phosphate) which can be tricky to find as many places like hardware stores sell ‘TSP’ with ‘alternative’ in teeny tiny letters next to it on the label.

if either of the above didn’t work then an overnight soak in 50:1 MA does the trick.

Do you think it’s OK to do in a month when the summers over or should I do it now?

If the 14 last year was right, then it’s time at 18. Let it soak overnight and give it a good rinse. It’s easy enough.

I modified it.

So it is single speed I assume.

You do not need to run it 24/7. You do need to brush / swim in the pool very often to keep the algae from returning. As you are adding chlorine manually, just be sure to run the pump at least for an hour after adding the chlorine. Otherwise 6-8 hours per day should be sufficient.

I brush it every time I put chlorine in in the morning, and we swim as much as possible. Is weekly vacuuming enough?

Awsome !!

You’ll know. In the spring and fall there is a lot more crud falling than now. With above ground circulation / skimming being what it is, most of your crud will sink. Adjust as necessary when your pool tells you. :)
