Hi,

SWG, floor cleaning system, intellichor pump, 27000 gallons inground, in the woods, sun morning, afternoon shade. Maryland.

Running SWG at 60% for 10 hours a day. Water looking amazing. Ph was high, CYA low.

PH 7.9
FC 5.0.
TA 100
CH 300
CYA 0
80 °F

Chlorine was a bit high for my tastes so I turned SWG down to 40%.

No borates had been added yet. I added CYA in three divided doses to raise it to 50, six boxes of borax with a plan to add 6 more, and two gallons of acid. (I looked the proportions of acid to add for Borax - must have got it wrong.)

I got a cloudy mess.

Retested chlorine two days later - down to 2.0. PH very low. (Too low to read.). I added the remaining 6 borax as I wanted to get that done. Two bottles of bleach. Turned up SWG to 100% and ran overnight.

Tested next day. Chlorine 4.0. Water still cloudy/greenish, slightly better.

So what the heck happened?

My questions:

When I add CYA, does that lower the chlorine in the water? I probably shouldn't have adjusted down the SWG before adding the CYA.

Did it matter that I added CYA and borax at the same time?

I've been running my pool bleach/baking soda/borax style for 10+ years with good results thanks to these forums. But adding CYA seems to get me in trouble.

Thanks,
Deb.
