Which chemical to address first?

The roughness may be a little calcium build up that you can work on after the slam. Is this an intex style cartridge filter?
I don’t know. It’s a Voyager Swim Pro / Hayward filter and pump. Here’s a photo of it. I think I replaced it last year or the year before. How long do they last? Last night I got in and stored it all up looking for a my eyeball and ring that holds it in. It was super murky after that but is back to its normal cloudy self. BTW my pressure gauge is broken.

Did you have CYA when you closed? With no CYA your chlorine isn't going to last very long. How long after adding chlorine did you take the chlorine test? Do you have a more recent test?
Hi. I didn’t close the pool last year and don’t know what the guy put in. But my CYA reagent was just delivered so I’ll test that now.

I just installed a new filter cartridge. Also bought a pressure gauge for $5 and will put that in as soon as I get my next spurt of energy. I need to aerate but haven’t found the ring to the outlet eyeball yet and the one I ordered on Amazon doesn’t fit or won’t go on for some reason. I’m thinking about bungee cording the submersible sump pump to the pool steps and turning it on to create a fountain. Has anyone tried that? How did it work?

Also... still cloudy today but a tiny bit better. I hope the new filter does the trick so I can celebrate.

I finally got a chance to test the CYA and it was only 20. I didn’t have any stabilizer so last night I put in a few bags of Dichlor shock that I had around. I don’t usually use it but that brought the CYA up to 30.

It totally serves a purpose sometimes like this one. Regular use is begging for future problems.

But look at you go !! Perfect TFP protocol :

Know where you are (with reliable testing)
Know what to add
Know what it will do
Verify you reached your target and pat yourself on the back.

Well. Done.

Aw, shucks. ☺️

That's the TFP way. You're in control of your own pool and through your own reliable testing, you know exactly what you need to add and when to add it. No more getting scammed by someone at the pool store saying you need this and that. You now know better. ;)

Yes they sure do have a racket going on at the pool store with their “free testing and advice”. I’ve learned so much from TFP! Thanks to you and others here for the excellent education. After two weeks I wasn’t making much progress with the cloudiness but yesterday I installed a new filter cartridge and noticed a huge difference this morning. Wish I’d done that at the beginning. And I figured out why the eyeball wouldn’t screw in. Until I actually got in the water I couldn’t see that the ball had escaped from the collar which had cracked. I’d looked and looked for that collar ring Because I knew it had to be at the bottom of the pool somewhere if the ball got out. But nope. The little crack made it open up just enough for the ball to get out and the ring was still screwed on. Once inside the pool I could actually see it instead of just going by feel. Sheesh.

Got it crystal clear, scrubbed and vacuumed. It took me 16 days and 30 gallons bleach. After two weeks of fighting it I replaced my filter cartridge and then it cleared up in 2 days. I’ve been accused of being obsessed with the chemicals. Thank you for your support everybody!
