Hello everyone. Our pool installation is scheduled to begin in about 2 weeks and we cannot wait as it has been on order for 8 months. Our PB talked me into a fixed speed pump when we signed our contract, he said that VS pumps were unreliable and unproven. I joined TPF about a week ago and after a lot of reading I now realize that he was WRONG. I really want to change to a VS model. Our pool is a 10,000 gallon saltwater with a sand filter and Pentair I-clor generator. I need help determining what manufacturer and model that I should ask for, I will be talking to him early next week. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Pentair Intelliflo VS 011056. The iChlor will integrate with the Intelliflo via RS485 cable to be sure the iChlor will not generate chlorine when the pump is off.

Are you confident in your PB? Saying something that wrong is a red flag.

Thanks for the response, I have been researching on the Pentair site and am looking at the Intelliflow i1. It seems to be for smaller pools and still has all of the automation capabilities (and is $700 cheaper) Thoughts?

Your pb is stuck in the past, vs pumps last way longer than single speed pumps. They work at slower rpms and that equates to longevity. I will not install single speed pumps.
I agree, that is why I am working with him to improve, as a retired chemical engineer I can help him improve his knowledge base

that pumps cuts you HP down to 1hp from 3hp.. you get WAY lower flow from the same motor.. from what I saw it costs the same or close to the 3hp also... It was made to install in Los Angeles and Phoenix where they have lost there minds and control everything thinking they know better...

I understand, but if my pool is only 10,000 gal do I need the larger flow (hp)?

You will not get the flow that the normal pump gets... in other words to move the same amount of water you will have to turn the pump up and use more power to move the same amount of water the bigger pump does costing you more money...

Do you a family of have pump curves that show speed, head and flow for this series of pumps. I have not been able to find them. It is important to have these to really know max flow and head available at 1 hp

the ones I posted were for those 2 pumps
I understand, but, I am looking for the curves that include power consumed (hp) This lets me know how much flow I can expect at 1 hp at different heads. I could calculate this from pump laws, but I do not know what the pump efficiency is at the different shaft speeds.

On the Hayward website, there is an application that allows you to change the speed of a pump and see the flow and the power level. Does Pentair have a similar application on their website?

My Intelliflo VS works great on my 6000 gallon pool. It runs most of the time at 1500 rpm. Using ~200watts.
