SLAM - How Long????

CYA - 40ppm
Current FC - 22ppm
Current TC - 0PPM
Water is clear.
Chlorine loss overnight is ~5-6ppm
Cartridge Filter System
Plaster pool

*My pool was in BAD shape. I normally would have drained it, but I decided to do the SLAM to kill everything in the pipes, filter, etc...

I am on day 15 at this point. The only time I've stopped the pump is to clean the filter. Every day at first, now once every 3-4 days.

Water is clear, but bottom looks stained in some areas and won't brush off with regular or metal wire brush. Chlorine hasn't gotten below 14ppm and I quickly get it back to 22-24 ppm.

I still see light brown/tan dust stirred up when brushing sides/bottom, but it disappears quickly.

Any thoughts??

WElcome to TFP.

Why are you at FC 22ppm with CYA 40?

SLAM FC for CYA 40 is 16. See

Keep your FC at 16 and see what your overnight loss is.

@BBBJD have you looked for hidden algae sources like ladders, light niches, water features, drain covers, skimmer weirs/throats & scrubbed these places? Algae is sneaky

I'm going through the (hopefully) last nite of slamming (OCLT). You have definitely come to the right place!! There are people here that will walk you thru every step to get your pool sparkling again. You might want to add your equipment/system to your signature so the experts here can help you better. Under your name on the upper right corner go to "account details" and list your equipment. I don't know, but 15 days seems like a long time to be slamming. (Maybe not... I don't know what you started with.) Good luck, hang in there!!

He is in Central America, it could very well be mustard algae.

Alan, the OCLT is the telling factor. If you lose FC overnight, something is eating it. There are organics still reacting. Have you cleaned the filters?

Yes, I've cleaned the filters, I have two sets...even soaked them in a muriatic solution overnight (after removing oils).

My main question/concern is that it looks like there is still a dusty algae bloom occurring when I brush, but chlorine has been 15+ for 15 days. Is it dead algae or new algae?

Is it possible that the filters aren't picking up whatever it is and just recirculating it?

Sometimes SLAM takes a little more time. You said your pool was in really bad shape when you started, right?

The staining you mentioned that doesn’t budge when you brush - can we see a photo of that?

How often are you testing and raising back to SLAM level?

Are you absolutely certain that your CYA is 40?

You didn’t answer the other question about hidden spots for algae.

Please create your signature with details of your pool and equipment. It helps us to know what you are dealing with. Like what specific type of filter do you have that may be a problem.

Are you running your pump 24/7?

Do you have a pool cleaner?

You meant CC is zero, correct? TC is FC plus CC, so TC wouldn’t be zero in a properly chlorinated pool.

I don't understand what you mean...
The three criteria are passing OCLT, CC of .5 or lower, and clear water. You have all three, you just called CC the wrong thing. 😉

Taking SLAM out one more day after passing all 3 is extra insurance.

Do you still have staining? If so take a pic on a non windy day n pump off so we can see it and we can help you possibly get rid of it. I kinda see some tinges of discoloration.
