Post freeze protection start up

First, thanks to all that have been helping us newly iced pool owners in and around Texas. While it was 10 degrees here, it was 25 degrees in anchorage Alaska..

Next, my filter, pumps and heater are water free. I’ve always filled my filter 1/2 full b4 firing up filter pump. My back is a little fried, so can i fill up pump/return lines and crank on the VSP? Will pump fill up entire filter or does some portion need to be filled? Of course, I’ll leave pressure relief valve open till all air is purged. Also, I’ll fill up spa & pool levels to accommodate the water replacement of all on pad. Do i need to do anything w heater?

If your pump is not alot higher than your pool water level, you should be able to just start the system once you have installed all the drain plugs (inspect and lube the orings). As you said, leave the filter purge valve open until water comes out of it.

We’ve all been there listing to the Pssssssssssssst for 3 minutes which feels like 3 hours when you’re watching it. Then. Whooooooosh. Water. Watch the pump basket and as long as it fills just wait out the air release.

If there are any issues catching prime, the first thing to inspect is the drain plug orings and the pump basket oring and surfaces on the pump.

When I pulled the drain plug on my filter I had some DE spill out as well. Do I need to add more upon startup?

As you are unsure how much came out, do a backwash (or better yet a full break down and clean) and then add the amount of DE you normally would for whichever process you used.
