Hi all ,
we filled out pool for the first time ever on Saturday . We got our test results from Leslie pool and purchased the necessary chemicals needed. We have never owned a pool so I have read the pool school and watched various videos . My Pool results Say to use 2lbs 9oz. Of dry acid as my first chemical.
Q. Do I Just measure out the 2lbs 9oz and mix with bucket of water and then pour in the full amount into pool ? I ask because it says to put not more 6oz at a time and wait 4hrs in between pours. that’s something like 40 Hrs,
is that right ? Also how long after you fill your brand new pool can you start swimming since you have to add chemicals In pool to get all the correct levels . Our pool holds 2,873 gallons

Welcome to the forum!

Read the above and follow that to manage your pool water chemistry. Get a basic drop based test kit (not strips, they are inaccurate and we will not believe them).

Please, do not follow what Leslies tells you to do.

Ok thanks I’ll read this ... I have to say I have already added 6 oz of the dry acid and it’s been running through about 3 hrs . I do have a kit that you fill and color with dyes it’s a 5 way test . Is that the same as a drop kit ? have I made a mistake my adding dry acid as the first chemical in my pool ? Yikes !

Great you have the drop test.

No, you have not made a mistake adding the dry acid. When you can, post results from all your tests that your kit gives.

And read the links, and follow the Seasonal pools template.

Hi there I’m a new pool owner , I had my pool tested and I’m wondering if I add chlorine and cya at the same time . I have read the pool school and have the pool math app . I just don’t know what to add first and how long to wait before adding Any of the chemicals Needed in a pool . There are a lot of different ways to do these things from the directions of the pool supply stores to you tube videos I watch, completely lost . My pool is 2,873 gallons .
thanks for the help .

You can added them at the same time. If you use dry CYA, it will take a little time to dissolve. It dissolves fastest by putting it in a sock in front of the return to the pool, but in any case, you won't get a CYA reading right away.

Most importantly, get chlorine in the pool immediately and monitor and add daily. It doesn't take long to get algae in a pool with no chlorine, and the chlorine will dissipate very quickly until the CYA is dissolved.

Even after CYA is dissolved, you will need to add chlorine daily, so you really need to have a dependable test kit to test water daily until you learn how much FC loss you experience. Otherwise, you won't know how much to add.

Was the pool filled up recently or are you just going by the pool store test? How have you been chlorinating your pool up until now, liquid chlorine, salt water generator or 3 inch pucks?
If it was filled up recently, since tap water has 0 CYA, it will be safe to add 30ppm worth of CYA based on Pool Math calculations.
If, however, this is just based on pool store test and you have been using trichlor pucks, I would be very careful with their advice as pool store test results are very unreliable.

I would recommend you get a quality test kit, such as the TF100 or Taylor K-2006C. and test the CYA and all other parameters yourself.
In the meantime, add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine daily until your test kit arrives.

Hi so I might have misunderstood what a drop test is . Mine is this kind
These are the chemicals i purchased :
All I have added was about 12 oz of acid that’s all.
so at this point it’s been 4 days with cover on at night the only chemical that had been added is about 12 oz of dry acid that was poured in as directed by TFP Pool school . I poured in 6 oz waited four hrs With pump running and poured in another 6 oz Pun ran about 3 hrs . I think I’m confused because leslies pool said to do one thing and that was very confusing so I read pool school and I would like to do it the TFP way .
Q. I just need help on when to add chemicals together or how long apart ... how long to run it for and if I need to run Pump with all the chemicals .

I attached pics of what chems I have and Which test kit I am using . Here is what pool math app says to add (Pics attached ) . I tested this morning and the results I attached earlier are still the same .
Q. Should I add the full 11 oz of bleach first then how long should I wait to add liquid cya ? And then at what point would I test again to see if I should add more something ? Also when would it be safe to swim in ?
Thanks for the guidance I think leslies Pool instructions really stuck and now I’m learning a new way to do something I have never tried .

Add the bleach now.
For conditioner, the liquid is an issue when using less than the full container. You have to shake it up really well. So add what Poolmath says after shaking the bottle really well. Then each day, add about 12oz of bleach. Test with your kit every couple days before you add the bleach to be sure there is still a yellow result for TC. Test pH to be sure it is in the 7’s.

Great thanks a bunch I’m going to do that now . I’ll keep you posted on the results .

Hi Cmak, and welcome to TFP. You can already see how much help you're going to get here, so keep the questions coming. I won't cloud up all the other advice, except to add my "standard," though I think you're getting this already. Don't mix and match advice from multiple resources. That will fail. Pick one, stick to it, ignore the other. Forget/ignore EVERYTHING you learned from Leslie's. Don't look back. Don't use their app! Follow the instructions you're getting here, and you'll be golden. This forum is heavily moderated and is designed to teach one method of pool care. There is no debating going on here when it comes to the chemistry. You might get multiple people helping you at once (cool, right?), but they will all be telling you the same thing. And if you stumble a bit, no worries. You'll figure it out quick. We ALL started in the exact same place as you. Even the experts here. Good luck. Glad that you found us!!

Coolio. Now, to help us help you even better, you might work on your signature. The more we know about your pool and gear, the better our advice will be. The experts here are helping a lot of people all at once, and can't really hunt around an entire thread for what you might have described about your pool. In the signature, they don't have to look far. Mine is the OCD version, as an example! Also, they like it when you line up your test results for 'em, in our standard format, vertical, not in a sentence, and text is faster for them than clicking on screen shots. Again, helping them to help more of us. Here's the skinny on all that:

OK I will actually take a look at this right now. Yes I see how my format looks and I can see how things can be confusing so I will do my best to format and add to my signature.
I have a question about my test kit . My test kit says it will test for five things :chlorine, bromine, pH, acid demand and total alkalinity. Does my kit test for CYA levels ?
also using the math app I have connected it to my account does it show up for others to see so that people who can help can look at my log from the forum. Thanks a bunch :)

Your test kit does not test for CYA. That is why I directed you to follow the Seasonal pool instructions. What you put in you assume is in the pool as far as CYA goes. If your pool turns cloudy or any algae, you dump the water, clean the pool, and start over.

I've caught references to folks being able to post their app's logs. I haven't done that yet. But the tried'n'true format is still going to be the fastest for the experts, in this order. (Unless for some reason they need to analyze the history of your testing.)
FC:
CC:
pH:
TA:
CH:
CYA:
Borates – (if you are using borates)

You're not doing anything wrong. I'm just giving you some tips that help everybody working towards the common goal: your perfect, crystal clear, healthy pool!

And the link I gave you has links to more information about the testing kits we recommend. Then we all put what kits we bought in our signatures, too, which also helps the "advice givers."

If you don't take down your pool annually, you'll want one of the recommended kits. The kit you have now will still get used up, it wasn't money wasted.
