So, pool has been sitting at 90 degrees, and it is hot as heck outside, so in advance of the 4th and a family get-together we bought two of these: Amazon.com : Abba Patio 8 x 10ft Offset Patio Umbrella Rectangular Cantilever Outdoor Hanging Umbrella with Crank & Easy Tilt & Cross Base for Garden, Deck, Backyard, Pool, Sand : Garden & Outdoor to shade the pool.
We're about to pour some concrete weights to keep them from tipping over/blowing away. Does anyone have something like this poolside? How much weight do you have in your base?

A couple of years ago, I bought the following from Amazon:
Abba Patio Offset Cantilever Umbrella 11-Feet Outdoor Patio Hanging Umbrella with Cross Base, Cocoa
Abba Patio Cantilever Offset Umbrella Base Plate Set, Black, Pack of 4
Rhino Round Umbrella Base Weight, 18" ~ fits any Offset, Cantilever or Outdoor Patio Umbrella Stand - Replaces Ugly Sand Bags ~ Easy set up

It looks like Amazon no longer carries the Rhino Base Weight.

Between the the Rhino weight and the Abba set of base plates, I think I have 200 lbs. of sand holding the umbrella. The umbrella has never tipped a bit. If we get a strong cross-breeze, the umbrella itself flexes and makes creaking sounds. But, I think that is just the nature of a large cantilever umbrella.

Here's a picture showing the umbrella:

I just wanted to add to my post about the cantilever umbrella. In the picture I posted, you can see 2 standard umbrellas in addition to the cantilever umbrella. Those 2 umbrellas are in the following stands:

They are called Shademobiles from rollingumbrellas.com. They have 2 lockable wheels, and you can get over 100 lbs of weight in the base. We've had the 2 stands since 2013.

FWIW, we have a similar umbrella and I have two 80# sandbags laying across the legs. It has blown over once when a freak storm blew up while I was otherwise engaged.
Not pretty, yet... (I may paint them once they're fully cured both to make them prettier and to make them more obvious so no one breaks a toe)... But these aren't going anywhere anytime soon. One bag of quikrete per block.

Last pic. Two more weights curing, but one is enough to hold it down. Loving the shade!IMG_20200628_135051.jpg

That’s pretty cool. How did you make the forms? I may try that.
We built wood frames and screwed a 2x4 ripped to the same height as the umbrella base cross beam across the bottom. We lined it with a garbage bag, then laid a looped rope inside to make handles. Then poured the concrete in the box.

I tried sail shades, but didn’t want to have permanently installed poles, so I anchored them to trees around the pool. They provided great shade, but I was constantly taking them down and putting them back up due to concern with winds. Plus they interfered with the diving board. Was too much work and I ended up installing a Glacier chiller. Water temp used to get in the mid 90s by July. My current water temp is 80 on July 8, with air temp near 100. Best addition to the pool we’ve made!

I have used a cantilever umbrella for about 8 years now. There is 200 lbs of sand holding the base. It has only tipped over once in all that time. That occurred when there was a sudden wind burst. My main recommendation is to put the umbrella down when not using the pool or if the weather forecast is for moderate winds when you are using the pool.

So which umbrellas hold up better, the cantilever weighted type or the ones that fit in an umbrella sleeve?

We have a lot of wind here and wind gusts. I'm planning on umbrella sleeves in our upcoming pool build but wondering if that's not necessary if these others work just as well if not better. Thoughts?

I would say the ones in an umbrella sleeve. The cantilever ones have to be weighed down heavily and they still may sway with the slightest gust. We have both but prefer the cantilever ones simply because of the larger size.

We wanted shade over the pool itself, so we needed the cantilevered umbrellas. If you are looking for shade for the patio, either could work. In terms of holding up better, no idea. We've had the sunshelf umbrella for a year (took it down in the winter) and the big cantilevered ones for a month and a half. They'll get stored away sometime this fall. We crank all the umbrellas down for storms. For BIG storms we'll put them away with the rest of the patio furniture.
