Hole in DE filter

I think I may have an issue with my DE filter. It's a Hayward 48 sqft. Unknown life. Looks older. If i run my polaris robot the pool will look clean when the filter goes off around 8pm. I go outside the following day at 7am. Floor still relatively spotless. Filter kicks on 8am. Come home at 5pm and see residue at bottom of pool. At the end of last season I disassembled the grids for cleaning and inspection. Nothing obvious to me. Does this sound like a hole in a grid? I'm thinking of replacing the entire housing and grid assembly since it's old anyways. If I left the filter on recirc and not filter for a day would that be the next troubleshooting step?

What's odd is that if you had a hole in one of the grids, I would expect to see DE as well. I only see the dark things down there, so I'm a bit confused as well. I suppose before opening it up you could let the Polaris get it clean and then let it run on recirculate the next day just to compare.

If you have a multiport, sure, take the filter out of the equation using recirculate.

I don't know if you've ever tried holding the backwash hose when it's going, but you'll gain a new respect for firemen and you'll realize just how much water goes through your filter and how fast. It won't take much of a gap to let a lot of DE out. The screen on the air bleed hose is a common culprit.You know about torn screens. In the past others have discovered a crack in a manifold that looks fine on examination but obviously spreads apart under pressure.

I appreciate you confirming that. I would imagine if I had a hole I'd see DE mess all over. It's almost like algae particles. I'll still try the recirculate and see what happens. I wonder if it's find algae that the polaris just stirs up. I have also manually vacuumed here and there and this issues seems to repeat. I use an algaecide treatment every couple of weeks but maybe it's still forming.

That's a real possibility - both the Polaris stirring things up and algae But Richard makes some very good points about the filter when it's under pressure. So if you inspect and rule the filter out of the equation, a SLAM Process may be in order.
 
The experiment is complete.

Friday night: Vacuumed with Polaris.
Saturday morning: Pool floor clear, ran pump on recirc
Saturday afternoon: Pool floor clear, switched over to filter
Saturday night: noticed some residual on floor. vacuumed again.
Sunday morning: Pool clear, backwashed and recharged filter with de, set filter to filter
Sunday after: Same green/darkish residue on floor.

I guess I have a filter issue.

What I don't understand is when I back wash it doesn't look green at all. It's mostly gray water that is getting backwashed. Is it posible this green/darkish silt is really coming from the filter?

One more thing I'll try is to give the pool a good manual vacuum.

It's not a terrible problem. I may hold off until next season to replace the filter.

Grid or manifold or missing/broken O-ring. Somewhere there's an opening between the clean side and the dirty side of the filter.
 
I’ve had a similar problem and believe (hope) it is the auto air relief assembly, which is around $20. There is fabric that covers a plastic tube on this assembly and that fabric is torn on mine, exposing a vent on the tube. I have the new assembly and will replace at the next cleaning. It’s a cheap and easy fix, so it’s worth taking a look at.

I'm ready to buy the parts to fix this. I was going to start with the grid assembly and see how that works out. If I still had a problem I was planning on replacing the manifold. The piece you're referring to is the "flex air relief"?
