Looking to buy a new pool pump, but unsure of how powerful it should be for my pool? Pump & Sand Filter DIY Combo?

Hello! I've got a cheap above ground pool, which now has a broken pump. I was thinking of buying a pump like this one (New 1/2HP Electric Industrial Centrifugal Clear Clean Water Pump Pool Pond Farm 794685141669 | eBay) and combining it with a cheap DIY sand filter like these people did (

). (They basically made a sand bucket with hoses on both sides and water will be filtered through the sand on its way to the pump).

Does this sound like a terrible idea? And how much HP should I be looking at for pumps for my pool?

Your pool is too big for a 1/2 hp pump. You need at least 1 to 1.5 hp and a 19" sand filter at the bare minimum. I have a 14'x48" 4000 gal pool and 0.5 hp barely handles it.
