Copper Staining

I have a 18x36 inground vinyl pool, water has been super clear until recently. I had to add water to the pool (well water), then I shocked it - hence yellow staining EVERYWHERE.
It is definitely copper staining. I used vitamin C in a sock and got rid of most of the yellow staining in the shallow end, and plan on using stain out the pool store gave me for the deep end. They also gave me the product Phoneix Super Erase to get metals out, however, I have to make sure my chlorine levels are brought down to 1 or less before adding it, then add the Super Erase and run filter for 48 hours, clean filters, etc. and this will help remove all metals from the water. then slowly bring back up the chlorine levels.
My question is I am afraid to get the pool so low with chlorine that I will end up with alga. Its a catch 22 I feel like.

We are getting 2 days of high 70's low 80's but by end of week we will be back up in 90's. I am not sure if I should wait to do this process toward the end of the summer, as this is a 5 days process of running my pool with chlorine of less than 1.

Anyone have any thoughts experience in this?

Why are you so sure that's copper? Your descriptions sounds like iron (as it is in 98% of staining like that)

Sounds like Phoenix Super Eraser might be ascorbic acid and it will lift the stains from your pool but it WILL NOT REMOVE the iron from your water.

First think would be to confirm the stain.....copper or iron?

I got the water tested at the two different pool stores and I had 0 iron it was copper that was my problem metal. The pool store told me the Super Erase will remove the metals from the water, and to keep iron out of the pool from the times i have to add water to my pool to keep a bottle of metal magnet on hand to put in after. I am hoping this works as I don't want this staining every time i have top fill up pool with my hose!
