New Solar Cover

I had my last solar cover 3 years ago. I loved it, until it started to fall apart and leave little plastic "pucks" in the water. Today I received a new one and I'm pretty excited to get some warmth in the pool so I can swim! Pool was 73° when I put it on. Can't wait to see how well it works.

Of course, the winds started last night and they're the strongest I can remember so far this year. I really hope I did a good enough job weighting the cover down... I don't need pavers falling into the water. It's a good thing I just bought a bunch of salt bags, instead of actually doing the calculations

I'm in a pretty good spot tucked up next to the foothills west of Cajon Pass, but I'm starting to get a bit of wind too. It's howling a couple miles east of me.

Yesterday, despite the cool spell, my pool was still at 82 with the cover. I think our climates are similar.

Last night was insane! I went to bed, laid down, and then jumped up to look out the window. We get wind coming off of the hills by Porter Ranch.

Yeah, our climates should be pretty close. The west end of the Valley is by far the hottest/coldest area; summer's often up to 116° and in the winter it can get to freezing levels some nights.

I'm going to get a quote on a gas line soon. Not sure we're going to get a heater, but the wife is more onboard now then before. She wants our little girl to be able to go in the pool Also, I'll have our backyard/pool work paid off in a 3/4 months and that frees up a lot of money!

@fatboy1271 , Howdy neighbor. I'm in West Hills and had a heater and gas line installed last year. Best purchase I ever made... heated the pool to 91 during the beginning of Covid lockdown and the fam and I have been swimming EVERY day (I keep it at 86 now).

If you want a referral, I did my shopping around and this guy was by far the least expensive and knows his stuff. Hit me up via PM if interested.

Almost too well!!! We had a couple of 105F days a couple weeks ago. The pool hit 98F... I did laps two nights ago and it was 92F when I got out at Midnight

My CYA is dropping though and I noticed my chlorine is on the low side Working on that now, but otherwise it's been awesome!

Awesome! Do you have a heater as well? Building my first pool and on the fence whether or not I should keep the heater or if a solar cover will work just fine. Mya I ask what type of cover (brands/thickness) and where you got it? Thanks!

Hey @Watershow, no I don't have a heater, but really want one. From what I see on TFP it's recommended to have a solar cover along with your heater. The cover will help keep the heat in, so less gas is used to heat the pool. Also, you lose less water to evaporation. All around I think a solar cover is a great purchase!

This is the cover I purchased, which is currently out of stock: Yard Guard Clear Choice Solar Blanket 18' X 36' Rectangle - 12 Mil

My first cover was 16 mil and I think this 12 mil is way better.
