Water sample collection

Does anyone have any neat gadgets to collect a water sample for testing? I'm getting old and arthritic and don't want to bend down kneeling on the concrete deck to stick my hand in the water anymore. I'm thinking about a small bucket with a string tied to it and a little weight to make it sink.

Any other ideas?

I haven't personally done it yet, but cowboycasey on this forum suggested using a small length of PVC pipe with a cap on one end:

Hold your finger over a PVC pipe like a straw. Then fill up your bottle.

Or install a valve in the piping near your equipment. Like this pic.

Thanks all for the input.

Looking at the faucet that was posted by Randrx2 reminded me that there is a plug hole in the Hayward pump that I could connect a hose and an on off valve to. The sampler dipper looks like it would be clumsy to handle when you are pouring your sample into the test vial.

When I use the PVC dip method, I put into this bottle first, and then use that for my test tubes.

I just use a turkey baster. Walk to the deep end and dip it down to the bulb.
Easy.

Best to sample from the same area each time for consistent test results.

Its like a big syringe, and I can suck water from below the water and fill my vials in a single big squirt. I don't have to stick my arm in the water which is not at all a fun prospect in the winter. I put a piece of tape on it to measure out my sampling depth. I've considered making my own mini Nansen or Niskin sampler like I had when I was in the Oceanographer phase of my life.. but these things are only a buck!

The hard part is keeping the kids from using my delicate sampling instruments in a water fight.

Duct tape a generic squeeze bottle with the lid removed to a yard stick. If you submerse it quickly, no water will enter until it stops moving.
