Hi - we have been in this house a couple of years and have had terrible and expensive pools services. I had a new guy open the pool. He’s been twice this year and it looks awful. He has been TWICE.

I tested with the tf100 kit.

My next step was to go to Lowes and get some chemicals. Please let me know what my next steps should be.

Thank you!

I was going to go to Lowe’s and pick up supplies.
3 gallons mutating acid to lower ph.

to get the CYA to 30 for slam

3 bags of this?
says i need over 8 pounds

and then lots of liquid chlorine

says i need 5 gallons to start.

Hi,
if you used the TFP app or Pool Match to determine how much chemicals you need, then yes. Those qtys are correct.
Ph def needs to come down to about 7.2 and bring the CYA up to 30.
After you have started the SLAM, only test for FC and CCs. No need to test for anything else.

Great first post. You've really got a handle on the testing. You'll get a lot of help here, as Dave has already jumped in. While you're waiting, you can add all your pool info to your signature. Its useful so everyone helping you can see the sizes and equipment you are using.

Hi guys -
So PH level is looking good.
CYA is still 0. I read it takes up to a week to change.
Since I need to wait for CYA to get to 20-30 in order to start the slam - What do I do until CYA gets up? Can I put in liquid chlorine? How much etc? Will pool math tell me?

thanks guys!

No need to wait. If you have started the CYA dissolving assume it is in the water and raise your FC to SLAM level for the targeted CYA level.
In Poolmath, enter your test results. Touch the FC result and it will take you to the addition screen. Select the SLAM indicator. What bleach strength you are using and follow the directions.

What you put in the skimmer, if you backwash in the next week or so, you will lose some of that. What filter type do you have? Please update/edit your signature with filter, pump, pool surface, etc.

The pool guy showed up unexpectedly this morning. He normally comes on Thursdays. He scrubbed and vacuumed. Then he threw granular shock in the general direction of the algae. There is a bunch of black algae. I read you should be using a shock tablet directly on the black algae. FC was over 20 when i tested this AM. I explained I am trying to SLAM the pool. He did not add any other chemicals. I will give it a couple of hours and retest chlorine.

I ordered a stainless steel brush for the black algae.

ps i will investigate what filter i have.

The trichlor puck item for black algae is the last resort. Please follow the initial steps first.

Dumb question -I bought a stainless brush to get the black algae. Millards 5 inch heavy duty wire brush off amazon. Can I damage the pool with this? How hard should I be scrubbing? It showed up this morning and I did everything very lightly.

Gentle use though it can damage plaster and tile if not careful.

Please add your pool surface type to your signature.

I started the slam Monday. It is now Thursday. Maintaining FC around 10-12. The pool is now blue, but the black algae has not changed. I am scrubbing a couple times a day. It doesnt do anything when I scrub it. Sounds like I need to be patient for a week before I evaluate a change in tactic.

Also what filter is this? There is no writing left on it

Thanks!
