Year 2 - Learning My Pool

I'm looking forward to a great pool season this year. I bought a house last year with a pool that was in rough shape. It had not been "on" for the previous 2 summers. I had some luck last year (thanks to this community) but the end of the season was rough. Hoping I can get some opinions to set myself up for success this year!

1. I started losing about an inch of water per day starting August last year. When I closed the pool, I let it drain until it stopped. It made it just under one of the jets. A buddy of mine who does pool work came over and put a patch around the jet. The leak is slowed big time but I'd guess I'm still losing 1/4 or less per day. Thoughts? Bad patch or more likely somewhere else?

2. I've got about 10 broken fingers on my filter. I don't mind replacing them but don't want to waste my money. It doesn't seem like they'd be a problem for water flow. Replace or no?

3. There is caulking around many o the connections. (pressure guage, union into the filter, water out of filter (not sure name)) This seems hacky to me. I'm thinking of removing each, cleaning the caulk, fresh tape and reconnect. Worth my time?

4. Noise. Last year, the filter was sitting on a cement paver (patio stone) and it rattled like crazy. This year, I replaced it with a rubber patio stone. I'm hoping this eliminates the noise. My filter is much louder than my buddies. I'm hoping this is the root of the problem. Any other ideas on noise with this pump?

5. My pool guy told me the Hayward 1.5 HP super pump is meant to run 24/7. Is this true? It certainly is a pain to turn it off and on a few times a day when you need to manually fill that little basket area with water. I feel like you should be able to set it on a timer but I just don't think mine self primes well enough to make that happen. If I don't fill up that little basket are with water, most of the time it will never prime. Pump is about 18" above the water level.

1/4" a day can be evaporation. It was windy the last few days and my pool lost over an inch of water in a few days with the wind and water temperature being greater then air temperature.

I don't know the Hayward DE filter to comment. Sometime when you breakdown the filter for cleaning you should consider fixing it.

Cleanup is always good. Once you dig into something be prepared to cut it out and rebuild it. Ususally they hacked it to geta round cutting it out. There is no in between to fix it right.

You start talking about your filter then ask about your pump.

What pump model do you have? What pump model does your buddy have?

Your pool guy is telling you nonsense. Sounds like you may have a suction side air leak preventing reliable priming.

Super helpful thank you. Based on your feedback, seems like..

Leak is fixed (awesome)
Everything after the pump may not be ideal but in not losing water so good to go for now.

I need to figure out this air leak. Referencing the numbering in the article..

1. Replaced basket gasket and no change.
2. I put my hose directly against the drain plug to mimic the pouring water trick. No change so I'm assuming that's not pulling air. (Assuming that makes sense)
3. See picture. Thoughts in the plumbing? There caulking in every joint which makes me think this is suspect.
4. I don't see any cracks and don't hear anything.
5. Water level is good. Almost to the third screw. Flapper doors don't flap at all. Just lay down. Problem? I'm assuming that cause an air leak though.
6. No spitting water.

Thoughts on number 3? Any of my assumptions wrong?1590370002708212818185489193769.jpg

O, I should also mention. Bubbles coming out of returns and pump loses prime in about an hour. I can bump it and it will prime again. Then another hour... Repeat.

I've got 2 skimmers with shut offs for each (picture). I let them each run individually and I get the same results (bubbles/lose prime). I'm assuming that means it's not an issue with the plumbing under ground.

That whole area is sketchy from the worm clamps to the caulking to the ball valves. The whole area should be cut out and redone.
