Buying Testing Kit Offline

Good morning, I am new to TFP last year with a new pool. I am opening the pool myself this year and do not have a test kit yet. Because of Covid, shipping is totally wacky. Can I buy a test kit in person somewhere? Can I do anything to get the pool going without the test kit? Thanks in advance.

The chances of finding the TFTestkits TF-100 or the Taylor K-2006C locally are virtually non-existent.

If you order the TF-100 today before 2:00 PM. they will wackily send it to you today and you'll have it in 2-3 days.

Can you do something to get started while you wait for the kit? Possibly. What does your water look like right now? Can you post a pic?

Order the TF-100 today.

Open the pool and get the pump running. Add a gallon of 10% liquid chlorine daily until you get the test kit. When you get your test kit you can then adjust pH and CYA as necessary.

Thank you! I will post a pic. My husband took it and left for work, so I cannot get a closer one right now. I'm packing up my classroom.
Is there anything else I should order from the site while I'm at it?

OK! Pump is running. I have to go back in to understand more about the DE filter. re: Backwashing and adding DE.
10% Chlorine is liquid shock or something else? And add late in the day? Thanks for your reply.

Get pool chlorinating liquid at big box stores or WM. At WM look for Pool Essentials brand in the pool section and/or lawn and garden. It will be 10-12% depending on brand and cheaper than pool store. Also get some stabilizer granules. Make sure it's 100% cyanuric acid only. Add to a sock and put in the skimmer. Squeeze it a couple of times and it will dissolve in 2 days or so. You can use liquid stabilizer also, it's easier to use but more expensive. Also get some MA for pH control. About $12 for two gal at big box store. That's all you need for now! TFP is cheap and easy! No expensive "magic potions" needed.

Thank you! I'll do that!

Also consider getting the Speedstir and one of the glycerin filled pressure gauges when you order your TF-100. That will put you in the free shipping category.

I would not purchase ANY OTHER chemistry until you can post meaningful test results with your new kit. Your pool appears in pretty good shape so 1 gallon of Liquid chlorine daily in that big pool will help keep it clear. I would leave EVERYTHING else alone.

1. Add one gallon of bleach or liquid chlorine daily until you can post test results.

2. Your pool water looks pretty good so that's all I would do for now.

3. Speedstir and Glycerin gauge are both nice add-ons.

OK, One last question! Do I run the filter 24/7 at this point?

No reason to.

I received my new test kit TF-100. Here are the results.
FC 4.5
C 4 .0
pH7.7
TA 260
CH325
CYA 20 (or less I could see the dot the whole time)
Salt 1790
Temp 70
CSI .49

There looks like there is dead algae at the bottom of the pool. I vacuumed to waste but I'm afraid of losing all of that water to finish the job. Is there any other remedy? Filter and then clean the filter (bad idea?)

Now what to do? Been adding a gal/ day until now.

Thanks!

You can vacuum to the filter but it will clog quickly. That is both the beauty and curse of DE filters. They catch everything, so when you have clear water they work like a dream! When you have dirty, swampy water it feels like a nightmare because they catch everything and you have to clean and recharge them frequently, possibly several times a day. If you vacuum to waste you will lose some water, just do it before you add chlorine so you don't drain it right back out again.
