Multiport broken or as expected?

Opened the pool today and first mishap of the season...

Had the multiport on Recirculate at first start so the worms, junk, etc in the skimmers and on the surface didn’t dirty the filter before I added DE. Was running fine for a couple hours. Added some chlorine and threw the robot in. Went off and did some other things.

My equipment is in my garage and to my surprise I came back to a garage with 1/2” water everywhere with water shooting out of the air relief valve I had left open.

I thought Recirc. was supposed to bypass the filter? It seemed to be at least for a little while. How did this happen?

Does this mean there’s an issue with the multiport? If so, I don’t intend to use Recirc. for the rest of the season. Any concerns with adding DE and leaving on filter. Can I expect it to function properly?

Being in your garage, you would think everything was fairly safe from the harsh winter cold weather. But I suppose it's still possible the spider gasket got stuck or pinched somehow from just sitting. You'll need to run it though the basic settings you use (filter, backwash, waste) to see if those work okay. If you see any other issues, you may have to pop the top off of that MPV and inspect the spider gasket. Also watch the waste line to ensure water ins't flowing out to waste when you don't want it to.

Appreciate the insight. Decide to pop off the top of the valve and discovered both a torn gasket and a broken barrier. The barrier sits between Recirc. and Backwash which explains why the filter filled and was dispensing water out of the air relief valve.

Was able to get a replacement gasket from the pool store, so I installed that. But will reserve fixing the actual plastic piece until after swim season hopefully. Our pool opens pretty clean so I was able to make it all last season without a backwash. Hopefully the same this year. If not, it’s not too bad to take the filters out and clean them.C82CC32D-1486-456F-ACE4-2A08A937A898.jpegFDD0C810-2134-42B1-8C6E-40258A8DD59B.jpeg
