draining water because of high CYA

Back with the latest reports.....

After draining more than half the pool and refilling, that ended at 9:30 last night. Then I started the SLAM process. Prior to that I did clean the filters.
CYA 70
FC. 12
I did chlorine at 24ppm overnight
At 5am there was no change
Throughout the day I have been adding chlorine every 2.5hrs to maintain SLAM and keeping 27-28ppm.

Question: I think my CYA is 70 from what I can tell. Is it OK to continue with the slam until algae is gone and then deal with the CYA?
Also, I did the CYA test at 50% just to doublecheck and it came out at 40. Can you do a 50% dilution when it is not over 100? Does that come out accurate?

You can do the dilution CYA test as you did. It imparts more error in the process. I would say your 70 ppm CYA is correct.
You can live with that for now. It will come down slowly over winter.

Keep your SLAM level FC at 28 ppm. When the water is crystal clear, do a OCLT.

Questions again!
I have been doing this SLAM process for two days now. I received my TF-100 last Friday (3days ago). My DPD powder was a clump when I started this process. I did not know if it was good or bad And I wanted to proceed on. I called the company today and they said it is not good because it probably had moisture.

1. Do you think that this will cause all my chlorine calculations to be off? I’m having to wait for a replacement.

2. Is it OK/advised to have my vacuum running during the SLAM?

3. Should I consider cleaning the cartridges again in the middle of a SLAM process?

4. I did bring the CYA down from 120 to my current 70. Should I consider bringing it down more after my SLAM process?

Thanks ☺️

Is the DPD powder discolored? If it is very dark, then it can effect the results. If just clumped, it should be ok.

What vacuum do you have? It should be fine to run it.

Clean the filter when the filter pressure rises by 25% over the clean filter pressure.

If your water is cheap and you want to, you can lower the CYA further. I would not go below 40 ppm CYA.

Soo helpful!!
The powder is a light purple color. I’m going to have to go with it till my replacement comes.

I have a Polaris racer. Which is know running. I’m getting wind making leaves fall.

Looks like my filter pressure has not budged from 12psi.

So water $ is the deciding factor. ?? I’ll decide when the SLAM is done.

Trusting the process!

Polaris -- is that a pressure side cleaner? You have another pump that runs for it?

Please put that detail in your signature. See our Signatures for an example.

Today will be day 5 of my SLAM. I don’t think my pool is completely done yet. I do know the tests I need to take to determine that. But, my question is....I am having to go out of town this evening until Sunday afternoon. That means there will be almost 3 days of no monitoring. As I look back, I have been putting almost 2 gallons of chlorine throughout the day.

Any thoughts on how I should leave my pool? Do I just add lots of chlorine and go? Add tabs to the chlorinator, which will increase CYA?

If I have a neighbor add chlorine for me, can I just have them throw a gallon in during the day and hope that is sufficient? Would that be better than tabs?

Having a neighbor add liquid chlorine each day is better than using the tablets for your situation.

Just have them add about what you have been adding each day. Test when you get home.

I’m back.....and with more questions.
From what I can tell, my SLAM was successful.

Since having been back from vacation I went ahead and drained more water to get my CYA down. That was two days ago.

However, I am currently dealing with my chlorine staying high!!

here are my stats from this am:
Water temp is 73*
FC 21
CC 0
CH 275
TA 180-190
CYA 50-60
pH ?

**what should be my action? The chlorine is sitting still. The temp and sun are low today. I cannot test for pH with high chlorine. Do I need to concern with TA?

pool looks good , aeration is happening with the spa.
Thanks to all,
Giovanna
