Electrical safety question

Sorry for my ignorance on this subject but I need to ask so I can feel safe before allowing work to proceed. I have a need to replace the wiring from my breaker panel to my pump and pool light. The old wiring is buried in conduit and , without a ridiculous amount of work can't be removed. Can the old wiring just be disconnected and left buried and new wiring installed? My concern is, by eliminating the old wiring, am I eliminating something else necessary to the "electrical safety" of the pool, like would the bonding sytem somehow be tied into the old wiring?

Why do you feel you need to replace the wiring?

The wires between your breaker panel and your pump would not have anything to do with the bonding system.

The wires to the pool light might, depending on how it is wired and there is no way to connect to the light without going through the conduit to the light.

Is the light light conduit metal or PVC?

Tell us more and I'm sure some of our electrical guys will be able to give you a better answer.

Bonding system is separate and independent of the electrical wiring. Installing new electrical wiring according to code and abandoning the old wiring is not a problem.

I've thought about doing it this way and would prefer to but it's a pretty long pull and probably in total 360º worth of bends

The light conduit is PVC.
I'd really like to be able to just pull the new wire through while pulling the old out, but all things considered I think it would be less work to just bury new wires.

Two people, a puller and feeder lubes the new wires going in. Try that before digging a long run. you still need the wire. Also check the codes in your region. if buried in conduit no need for romex. you can pull a 3 or 4 wire twist.

I'll give it a good try. Romex is part of the problem...that's what I have to pull out. I'll be pulling individual 12AWG's back into the conduit. I've read that pushing the lube through with compressed air will work. I assume this takes a little while?

typically stranded thhn will pull easier than romex. this is my experience. your mileage may vary.

Romex should never have been used. It's not rated for burial or conduit. Only inside a house.

If you're able to pull it out, then you can certainly pull in THWN wire. Tie it to the Romex and use the Romex to pull it in.

The old wire wouldn't budge. I wound up burying all new conduit & wiring (NO ROMEX! LOL). While I was at it I took the opportunity to add a couple of badly needed outlets around the area.
