I have what looks like an antique pool cleaner, and my pool is green, but roofers dropped tons of stuff in it as well, nails metal a hammer shingles etc.... should I drain it or slam it then clean bottom? I have a pool vacuum thing to is it okay to use or should I wait?

There is no point to SLAMing a pool with debris still in it. Get the pool clean of ALL visible material first and then SLAM the pool. Do you have a test kit that allows you the capability to SLAM?

Clean debris out of the pool by hand. Using the pool cleaner can drag stuff along the liner and rip it. The cleaner is not made to pickup that sort of stuff. Nails and other metal can create iron stains if not gotten out quickly.

I really doubt your pool will get clear as long as the roofers' trash is in your pool. I say drain it down until it's about half empty. Then start getting rid of the trash.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to try a SLAM first.
after slamming the pool, it's closer, my test kit arrived today so I'm going to sit down and read it once I get a minute, also found out our pool is 36k gal. And was told to treat it as if it was 40k gal

SLAM isn't a one time thing/application, it is a process. You need to maintain your FC SLAM level consistently by testing FC every 1-3 hours and adding chlorine to raise it back to SLAM level. This can take days or even weeks.

4000 gallons difference is a lot when you're considering amounts of chemicals. You can test to verify if that volume is correct, but I wouldn't suggest assuming 40K just yet.

Actually, if the pool is supposed to be 36K I think you should just use that volume for the time being. If it's more, you'll figure that out after you're done with the SLAM.

I do have a test kit, it came yesterday, I cleaned out everything I could find while driving in with a mask. I've started the slam process, I'm on day 3 of it at this time. I looks alot better. Green is gone and I'm going to vacuum it out in a few.
