What return fitting is this?

I bought a house last year and it had an in-ground pool in the back yard. I've never dealt with a pool before and I have no clue what I'm doing for the most part. The intake is standard, however, the return has this weird fitting. I had someone close the pool for me last year and they were not sure either. I would like to be able to have some sort of adapter to standard. The previous owners left a lot of equipment that require a standard return fitting, so I have no clue how they were using it.

The opening is 1.5in so none of the standard equipment fits in the hole. It is not threaded.

The pool is vinyl and has a sand filter, if that matters.

Can you take a pic of any other returns you have in the pool? I'd like to compare all the returns first before making my guess as to what this one is.

My pool unfortunately only has one return, which is this one. By the looks of it, I feel this return is the original. The intake has been replaced since the fitting is compatible with modern standard connections. The house was built in the 1950s, but I'm not sure how old the pool is.

Okie dokie.... since this is your only return, there is really nothing you should be doing to it. You wouldn't use it for anything else. Some pools with multiple returns can spare a return to use for a fountain, or a pressure side cleaner but you won't need either of those.
If you're thinking you could use it for a cleaner, I'd suggest not, and get a robot instead. Not only will a robot work far better it won't tie up your only return.

I was hoping to connect a skimmer that I bought (Amazon.com : PoolSkim Pool Skimmer and Pool Cleaner : Swimming Pool Maintenance Kits : Garden & Outdoor) since the previous owners built their own skimmer that doesn't work very well on the intake. I picked that one since it doesn't look like it would reduce the flow much and it had really good reviews. The problem I had was that the connection is the exact same size as the fitting and there were no threads.

If you have any suggestions for a intake side skimmer, it would be appreciated. The fitting I have for the intake is essentially the same thing as the return except it's a modern fitting with threads.

If you already bought the thing, go ahead and try it. I'd take the device's fitting to a good plumbing supply store and find some sort of adapter that can be fitted in there, but I'd personally avoid making it a permanent attachment in case it doesn't work well or it causes pressure problems.
