Suddenly... bird poop!

Hi everyone!

Starting over the last couple days, there are massive amounts of rather large sized bird poop all over the edge of my pool and getting into the water. I vacuumed just yesterday evening, and when I got home from work today there must be 30 more on the bottom I could count, not to mention the spots around the rim.

I have not had a combine chlorine measurement in 3 years, and tonight I got my first. I’m also going through chlorine like crazy. I poured a gallon of bleach in last night (which should have taken my fc to 8), and when I tested it when I got home it was down to 2.5! My cya is 40.

Can anyone help shed some light on this or offer some advice? These aren’t normal little song bird poops. These are what I would expect out of a crow or something much larger. And why would there suddenly be so many within a short amount of time??

Also, what the heck do I do? I took my fc up to 16 and then came inside to ask for help! I also put the solar cover on, to prevent any more poop getting in before I get home tomorrow and can vacuum it.

Sounds like you have a nest of Grackles. They take the poop of their young and drop it on the side of my pool EVERY YEAR. Its disgusting. They are literally like dive bombing airplanes, and they know what they are aiming for. Its bizarre.

Its too late now, the dive-bombing ends when the babies leave the nest. They love the arborvitaes. I would suggest that next year, you be proactive and prevent them from nesting there... easier said than done. I've given up. LOL

All you can do is keep your chlorine level in range and brush away. I'm sorry. Its gross. Worse than a penguin habitat at a zoo.

Yuck. It makes me feel better that I’m not alone! Do you know typically how long it lasts? Or will this be a summer long endeavor? I have no idea how I will possible keep up with this!

Thanks everyone. I got some realistic rubber snakes that I put around and on the pool ledge. Also got those inflatable dolphins that you fill the base with water... I was thinking maybe if they’re floating around and moving it will scare them off.

The solar cover is definitely helping. I vacuumed last night and when I checked the water when I got home from work just now the combined chlorine is gone. All the poop on the solar cover is conveniently piled on one end. I guess I’ll just have to keep it covered unless actually using the pool!

I’ll post back when I find out if the dolphins/snake combo works poolmom!
 
If anyone else encounters this problem... the rubber snakes worked for a bit, but I think they eventually figured them out as they intentionally placed a bunch of poos around and on top of one of the snakes. I think if anything the floating dolphins were more of a deterrent as they constantly move/change position.

Fortunately, they’ve moved on and now I’m just left with the aftermath still trying to get my water right!
