I'm sure this topic has been discussed before but I wanted to add my $.02 as well concerning this forum.

I was commenting on someones first time post called "First time owner in Florida." a few minutes ago and mentioned that (in my humble opinion and many others, I guess) step number one was to get a proper test kit. Well, when I joined TFP a year ago, this exact same advice (but given to me) set off lots of alarm bells in my head.

I'm thinking to myself, "Oh, hurry up and buy one of OUR test kits before we can help you. Yeah, I already see what this web site is all about". But then I think it was either @mknauss or @duraleigh that mentioned I could buy the Taylor test kit from amazon if I wished. So that got me thinking, "Well, I'll buy that one then because I'm not sure if they just repackage the same test kit from Taylor and just overcharge for it."

Boy, oh boy was I wrong with my suspicions. This site is truly filled to the brim with folks who are not looking to profit one single dime off of people who are having a tough time maintaining the pool and spas. I've seen time and time and time again where somebody who had the typical GREEN SWAMP comes back with pictures a week or two later with pretty, blue, clear and SAFE pool water. And now I know why tfteskits sells the TF-100 kit. Yes, I know it's still based off of the Taylor reagents but the K2006c kits doesn't really have enough of the reagents that somebody needs if they going to clear up a large pool via a week long SLAM process and then maintain their pool throughout the summer and fall.

And yes, I've also seen some folks coming onto this site who say, "I've been keeping my pool clean and safe with yada-yada-yada (** insert random chemical or mineral here) and y'all don't know everything about pool water". But that's ok too. If other pool owners have a method that works for them and it doesn't not include testing their own water or adding liquid chlorine most of the time to keep algae at bay, then bully for them. As long as they don't try to convince other newbies that their method is even better than learning how to test and treat our own water, more power to them.

After thinking about it for a few minutes, it is my opinion that it is really difficult for some people to locate any kind of valuable resource like this forum and quickly believe that it has people who are volunteering to help others without making a buck. People who have been pool owners for years and years and helping other brand new pool owners; who in turn become volunteers on here who help other newer pool owners. I'm sure I'm probably driving my point into the ground by now so I guess I will stop my random ranting now.

But one last point.... looking back on my beginning, I wish I would have bought the TF-100 but I did not. And now I've already bought my re-supply of reagents before I closed my pool last autumn. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "DOH!!"

TFP converting one pool owner and pool at a time to TFPC. Glad you hang around to pass the word to others who come by looking for help.

This is the best part! TFP definitely supports a "pay-it-forward" atmosphere!

And I appreciate the fact that each pool owner can spend as little or as much as we like using TFP methods :) From all manual to fully automated!

When I joined this forum I was testing at the pool store on a regular basis. One day I noticed the person testing my water got called out over the PA. She was looking around the store and I noticed the titrant she was dropping in the vial was not going in the vial. She gave me a list of things to buy. LOL! I walked out. I went home and ordered a TF100. I had already been on this site and gotten so much valuable advice I would have spent double the price as this site had saved me so much money already. We should all be thankful for the wealth of information and untiring support of our fellow TFP user base who freely give advice for nothing in return except the satisfaction of knowing they have a helped a fellow pool owner. I donated money to help keep this site up (it is not cheap to run a web site) so I could help pay it forward to future users. I have saved thousands of dollars so my donation was a drop in bucket. No pun intended. Cheers and Thank You TFP!

It didn't take long for me to realize the value in the advice given in this forum either. It truly is full of altruistic people, and has a friendly atmosphere.
I bought the K-2006C in the beginning as well. It is a great kit, and I actually prefer the carrying case and some of the components in it to the TF-100 components (I have both). I buy reagents from tftestkits.

Ah yes, that's the other point that I forgot to make. Thanks ComputerGuy. One of the main reasons why my wife and I had spent the last ten years only thinking about getting an above ground pool rather than actually saving money and buying a pool. It was the fear that I would need to do one of two things:

A. Drive to the pool store every week to bring my little sample of water and spend money on whatever they said purchase at the time.
B. Hire a pool service to come out and clean the pool, add the chems it needed and hope for the best.

But either choice would have cost us much more than we were really willing to spend. I'm sure nobody in our area would be willing to come out to clean and maintain our pool for less than.... what?? $50 a week? maybe even $100 a week. But I really did not see any other options. Pool water chemistry was waaaay too complicated for me to learn. So I was going to have to leave it for the pros. WRONG Mr. B. It only looked complicated.

I think for the entire 20 weeks we had our pool open last year (it was installed in Mid-June and I closed it in late Oct) we spent less than $200 in chemicals. Compared to my vivid imagination, that is super cheap.

I hear you MrB. I had a pool at this same house when I bought it 20 years ago. It was a nightmare to maintain and very costly. Back then I did not know about TFP, I dont know if it even existed. I ended up having it dug out and I had the hole filled in. Ten years later we built our new pool I was determined to figure out how to maintain the pool. I found this site and it was a life saver. I was never good at chemistry but I was determined to teach myself how to care for my new investment. My first two years were spent on this site reading anything and everything. I read forum posts daily. After a while it all sunk in and now it is like second nature. It goes to show that even and old dog like me can learn if you are willing to invest the time and effort. By the way, I am a former North Carolinian. Born and raised in the W-S area. Most of my extended family still live there. Wonderful place and people.

I was lucky enough to find TFP before filling in my pool. I did have AGP before but could be drained easily and inexpensively. I do like the carrying case of the Taylor better and can fit my speedstir inside it. The real reason was a 25% discount coupon on ebay and free shipping. But I have to agree that it sound like pushing the TF-100 to be able to clear your pool, you just have to keep on reading to pass that brain barrier.

I too had some doubts early on, but those doubts were erased very quickly when all my questions (that I now realize have been asked thousands AND THOUSANDS of times!) were answered quickly and with no comments like, "Just do a search!!!"...it has been very, VERY helpful.

Plus, like a good steak, I have ZERO issues paying for a service/item if there is value in it. The TF100 has extreme value.

Last point...I think a lot of us would much prefer to use a small business over the dark overlords that are Wal Mart and Amazon. Yes, they are very convenient, but I much prefer supporting small business.

I have to say when I first came across this forum I had the same exact this must be a scam to sell a product reaction. I was prepping for a new pool at the time and my quest for knowledge was in full gear. I thought to myself I don't need that kit but it seems like there is a lot of good information here. I spent a couple months reading and reading every time I had a question about my new pool plans. During that time I saw just how over the top helpful everyone here was and none of them had any stake in selling kits.

After many long hours reading the endless information here I thought I would try and give back to repay what was so freely given. Like many regular posters here before me have done.

That was 3 years ago and in that time I've never had a single water issue with my pool thanks to what I learned here, and that wonderful test kit. It's worth ever single cent and has paid for itself many times over.

This site is fire.

Had an awful time getting our new to us pool going last year. Opening was a breeze this year, test, add some baking soda and bleach done. (Plus pressure wash everything and put the solar cover and leaf net back on to keep those Dang tree frogs at least out of it)
