Which salt to buy?

I just bought 9 bags of "Diamond Crystal Solar Naturals Water Softener Salt Crystals". Check HD...there's a bulk price break after 10 bags. I used this salt last year and they dissolved fairly quick for water softener salt. If you get the "Pool Salt" you'll pay nearly double for smaller crystals.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this thread and wondering why Clorox salt has been bad mouthed- it has been found to be contaminated with metals and we have had more than a few folks report staining to their (often new!) pools from the salt. The Clorox company uses various sources for their salt (instead of one source alone) and no one knows for sure which bags are the faulty ones.

Just avoid Clorox altogether and to save a bunch just get the larger water softener salt as long as it is 99.4% or higher pure. No additives necessary.

I used 400 lbs of Chlorox recently when I refilled my pool. Just brushed it around until dissolved. No stains.

Just to note you have a vinyl pool. Staining from Clorox pool salt seems to mainly be reported affecting plaster pools.

Whew! I just added three bags of Chlorox salt that I got from BJs (6 bucks a bag) and relieved to read that it primarily stains only plaster pools (no staining for me) . I did wonder about Chlorox and double checked the bags for any ingredients other than salt (I was worried about stabilizer being added). From now on though I will get Diamond or water softener salt

I believe Diamond and Mortons salt actually comes from salt mines.

You can use any plain water softener or pool salt in your pool.

I suspect the salinity of your water is all ready pushing 1000 ppm.

To add 1000 ppm salinity to your pool you need to add 140 lbs of salt.

Is this salt ok to use with a bleach sanitizing method? 40lbs will be ok to add for the softening quality?

Depending on how old your pool water is you may already have 1,000 ppm or more of salt in it. 40lbs of salt will raise your salt by 351ppm. To check the salt level get the K-1766 Taylor Salt Test

We refilled after fresh plaster, this past December. It is a city water supply. I will look into the salt test, thank you. Is there some reference on how much is appropriate to have in a bleach sanitized pool?

Not really. Some say at 1500 ppm salinity they can feel a difference. Try that.

If you refilled in December last year your salinity in the pool will be less than 500ppm.

I used Morton's just to be conservative. Cost a couple bucks more per bag. Definitely do check the salt level before you start adding! I was shocked that mine had over 1000 ppm before adding any and would have been way over-target. I had a hard time getting information on the purity on some of the bags. Looking online I found the 99%+ on some and 99.7% on the bags I used. I did find the .3% on the floor and it just looked like sand, vacuumed it up with no incident.

I'll probably try water softener salt next the kind with just salt no "iron removal" additives. I used the strip test and it's definitely not as accurate as the preferred drop test. Strip test appears to match the calculated ppm level within 300 ppm. That seems to be fine. I'll get the drop test when my wife's not looking.

I hope this helps.

Chris

PS We love our salt pool! Wife would never let me go back now.

We do not have a SWG/SWCG, we run 2000ppm/2200ppm for comfort and will never be without salt now :D

We use the cheapest pure softener salt at Walmart, it was like $3.54 a bag :D
