Inlet Piping Orientation - Polaris Booster Pump

I am currently replacing my old sand filter with a Pentair cartridge filter and replacing the existing filter pump with an Intelliflo. I am taking this opportunity to rework the piping for my equipment, as it is real mess. I also have a PB4-60 Polaris booster pump.

In the Polaris pump manual, it shows the preferred orientation of the piping to have a "horizontal leg" coming off the tee, that goes into an elbow that goes down to the inground filter pump return line, as per the attached. Is there a reason/need for the "horizontal leg"? In my new piping plans I would have this exact configuration, except that the center leg of the tee goes straight down into the underground return line. My Polaris feed line comes off the tee exactly as shown in the diagram.

I live in this century, so I don't have a pressure side cleaner, but I can't see how the 'Horizontal leg' would make any difference at all...

I am still in the last century and my booster pump pickoff point is nothing like what is shown.

I agree with @Jimrahbe that your configuration will work fine.

Thanks for the confirmation. I just thought it odd they would point the horizontal leg on the drawing.

And yes, I'm aware of being stuck in the 20th century in terms of a pool cleaner, but on our new (to us) house, all the pool equipment we inherited was 15 - 30 years old...except for the Polaris and booster pump, which had just been replaced! So I plan to first spend my $$$ on new filter, new pump, adding automation, adding a SWG, adding a heater, LED lights, beer this summer by the pool...and then maybe a robot ;-)

I agree 100%... Several years ago I bought two rent houses with pools. They both had old equipment. I spent the first year or so going over there almost once a week for something, and went through two or three Hayward "Superpumps".. I then did what you are going to do.. I installed an EasyTouch with an IC40 SWCG and IntelliFlo pump at each house... After that, I have had zero problems... I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Jim - that's exactly what I'm doing - EasyTouch 8 with Screenlogic (going to use it to control some landscape lighting also), IC40, Intelliflo and CCP520 filter. Plus a Raypak heater.

And I fought for a number of years with a couple Hayward Superpumps at our old house. Feels really refreshing on this house to just rip everything out (except the Polaris!) and start from scratch with quality equipment, installed in a logical fashion.

There is nothing wrong with the EasyTouch and ScreenLogic, but it would be a mistake to not at least take a look at the new IntelliCenter.. Almost the same price and has built-in Control App, so you no longer need ScreenLogic... It has an Ethernet port so you can connect it right to your router.. An EasyTouch only lets you have 12 total schedules and 8 Feature circuits and no grouping of circuits.. The IntelliCenter lets you have a billion schedules (I think a 100, but I can't remember) and something like 32 Features circuits and you can group things to work together. In "theory" they will also control variable position actuators some time this year, but I'm not holding my breath.. "This year" is marketing talk for three years from now, maybe...

Jim - thank for the heads up! I will definitely go with the Intellicenter. I actually wasn't aware it was available as it is not widely advertised by the pool equipment suppliers.

I had planned out this project last summer and the consensus opinion I received at that time (from these forums) was to go with the EasyTouch 8 as the Intellicenter was still effectively vaporware. Life got in the way and am just now starting on the pool upgrade project, so for once my procrastination pays off.
