losing water

first let me explain my situation.
This large pool is seldom used and is becoming a money pit. Last year I began loosing more water than usual, two repair calls. First determined that water was leaking around skimmer basket.. 400.00, still leaking.. next crack in pipe at return jet. 700.00 still leaking. closed pool for season.

I have a tarp cover, held down my concrete blocks (because of the size and weight ) It had fallen in to the pool over winter, to open they pump any water off the top.

When the tarp was removed the pool was almost empty...only a little water in the deep end. I questioned whether they had pumped out too much and drained it.... Not so, I was assured , the pool has a big leak... on visual examination no apparent problems, (although several of the concrete blocks were now in the deep end.) I could not leave it empty so decided to fill it anyway. and see what happens over the summer. two large tanker trucks, 66000 liters plus water from city to top up last foot.

I test the water depth every day , with the pump off, then on etc. and seem to loose about an inch ever day regardless of what is running. This is not evaporation, as I took that into account.

For the water to go down so low I felt it must be somewhere in the bottom drain. |I had someone dive down and have a look, they found tennis balls from the dogs. and other junk, (there was no cover on the drain) and also that the in water light had not been properly attached and was just sort of hanging there. The light had a rust ring around the cover.

Two possible sources of leaks. Now how to see if |I can fix them. Called an underwater pool tester, 600.00 to come and look plus any repairs..no guarantee

I read in other posts that the bottom drain is not necessary and really serves no purpose and can be blocked off. Iread that it is to circulate bottom water, Is this true? Can it just be blocked off, will this harm anything

My first question is what to use.. someone suggested a plate of some sort, but what and where to buy one. I have no idea of what size I would need ,would screwing it into place be sufficient, or should pool putty also be used. I think I can hire to do this underwater so I do not have to drain it.

second. pool light it has not been used for many years, and I would like to take it out without leaving a big hole. is there a cover for this purpose or should I just have the cover permanently put is place again using this pool putty stuff.

If I had an option I would drain the thing, it has not been used for years, the dogs are too old to swim, and so am I
the only reason I fill it is I am afraid it would be an eye sore and a hazard.
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Re: losing water

The first step should be to block the main drain. Pool stores sell this to winterize pools. Make sure you mark your water level so you can check after plugging the main drain. If you dont loose any water, then fill up to the skimmer and star circulating, then clean all the debrie from the bottom and start a SLAM!

Re: losing water

I reread earlier posts and did try this last night. I found an old in and closed off the main drain from the skimmer basket... no joy, lost an inch of water overnight. will buy a new plug and try again tonight.

will I do erepairable damage if I put a plate over the bottom drain.

thanks for your suggestion.

Re: losing water

No damage from using a plate, but still have to use the plug for a tight seal. I personally would not use a plate unless its completely sealed, algae might build up there. Just use the plug and reinstall the cover.

Re: losing water

sorry I am confused.... I put the plug in the intake valve in the skimmer for this test...do you mean that I should put one in the bottom drain? if so, are they ALL the same size or do I need to figure out which one to buy?

regarding the plate... do they come in sizes or one size fits all. and where would I get one.

I don't think using a plate would be a good idea. You want to make a seal, e.g., fitting a plug inside the pipe.
