A friend is about to build a new pool , 16x32 gunite with inline chlorinator, builder spec'd out a cartridge filter for him...I'm a sand filter guy and believe he may be getting into a more maintenance type of filter then he realizes?? What's the pros/cons of a cartridge filter compared to a sand ?

Your friend may want to review the Pool School - Pool Filter Comparison page. In short, while the sand is convenient for easy backwashes, there are other seasonal considerations that come into play (i.e. deep cleaning the sand, potential spider gasket failure, laterals, etc). Then there's the additional use of water, perhaps not a problem in your area but for some very important. Cartridge filters, especially multi-cartridge, have come a long way. Some basic disassembly to gain access an rinse off the cartridges is about all. But in the end, a lot of it is personal preference. Hopefully that page will help your friend out.

This is a list he sent me, need to have him sign up here and get involved on the forum in the build area... Pretty limited equipment specs...
Which pump is he getting? They have single, two speed, and variable speed Tristars. He wants a two speed at a minimum, and might as well go variable.
I would go SWG, but I’m not sure about his natural stone coping with it. I know some people have had problems, others have been fine.
He has one skimmer, I would add a second if he has any kind of trees around.
