We bought a home with a vinyl pool 16 months ago. Already went through one summer of flawless ownership. Only had to add shock every week, have pucks in autochlorinator.

Have had a tech come out weekly and got to know him well, we decided that I can maintain the pool myself.

Got myself a TF100 and been having fun with it. Having some issues... but I think they're minor and I can take care of TA with some acid. Is muriatic acid safe to use with vinyl pools?. ~30,000 gallon pool.

FC 3
CC 3
pH 7.8
TA 180
CH 160
CYA 70

Now for some pictures. First pic is how we bought the house, I had to open up some space and make the lawn more green ;)

according to the fc/cya chart, I need to be at FC 8? That seems high too me, don't really want that strong chlorine smell. I keep the pool covered unless were swimming which is only a couple hours a day.

I'm using cal hypo once a week to maintain but I will switch to LC.

Pool pump runs 10 hours a day with a sand filter.

The chlorine 'smell' is from CC. If you maintain your FC in the target level as shown [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA], you will never have that 'smell'.

If you keep the pool covered the CC will build up in the pool. It needs UV (sunlight) on the pool to burn them off. So just be sure you remove the cover for a couple hours during the day a few times a week.

I doubt your pump needs to run that much with the pool covered. As you will be using LC, you only need to run it a couple hours a day after adding the chlorine. You are not skimming with the cover on so no need to run the pump for that.

Take care --

Good point, Thought sun only affected FC and CC got filtered out.

I'm probably over doing the pump but my electric bill has only been $40 higher a month so I figured why not. It's a single speed 1.5 from 2008. Might upgrade to a 2 speed and maybe just run low during the day. Pump has been running hot, paint is fine but I can't hold my hand to it.

That looks great! We do basically have the same pool haha. I have to say I love the yard, and great move pushing the fence back to your property line. I wish we could do that, but my wife wants to keep the fencing where it is. Happy wife...

Congrats!

Just to reaffirm what Mike said, with FC at 8 you won't smell any chlorine. My CYA is 70 and my FC stays close to 10 and there is no smell at all. It's CC that stinks, not FC.

Pool looks nice, good move pushing the fence out to the property line. My only observation and it might be due to the perspective, is the light string seems to be hanging over the pool. I would be cautious if that is the case, not sure how it is wired but it could be messy if it snapped and hit the water.

That has crossed my mind. The lights are those heavy duty string lights from costco. They are on a GCFI outlet and are attached to those trees which are maybe 10' away from the pool. Either way, still worries me but I'm paranoid lol

Might just take them out.

The lights where they are and being GFCI protected would pass a code inspection if that makes you feel any better.

Oh and you did a very nice job on the pool it looks great, I bet the lights look good at night.
