If anyone is still awake need some help fast if possible.

Quick thank you - you inspired me to go back and watch a video of a swamp SLAM Process backwash I helped with.

Warning! This video contains extreme algae violence and may not be suitable for all audiences. Content may cause you to maintain an [FC/CYA]appropriate level of FC[/FC/CYA] in your pool forever! If you wish to watch it too, here's the link, loading slow since it is 2 minutes long.
Yesterday's backwash was beautiful! Feel free to pop some popcorn and watch the video here. (Backwash, rinse, backwash, rinse) White printer paper provided for contrast.

I kinda checked out during the DIY convo, but it looked cool, remind me - did you decide to order the standalone FAS-DPD test (or whatever chem you're missing to run it)? what are your current goals with the pool and how can we help? You've been great to work with, just want to make sure we serve you well! (oh no, someone please shoot me once with a Zat, I sound like Seth got me with the Nish'ta or Hathor exhaled on me, or fell victim to the herb of Lucius, or whatever else I'm forgetting)

I feel much much better now that I can test FC and cc accurately

FC 8.5
CC 0.5
pH 7.4
Hardness (hth) never went red so 0?
TA 50
CYA 50

Oh, this is looking much, much better!

The CH test isn’t that important in a vinyl pool, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Questions? Water crystal clear? Ready for your first Overnight Chlorine Loss Test?

So according to [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] for your CYA 50 (assuming performed according to CYA Extended Instructions), your target FC when the pool is crystal clear, when CC is 0 or .5, and when you can pass an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test is 6-8 FC. If you have any problems with those, bring the FC up to 20 and keep bringing it back up there (SLAM Processing) until all the problems are resolved, then resume target FC.

Develop your own routine using the TFP basic-pool-care-schedule as a guide. I suggest you do daily or almost daily FC testing for at least a week so you can average out your Daily FC demand so on busy days, you can just add that amount of bleach or when you know you'll be busy the next day, just dump 2-3x that. I highly suggest a paper log book/sheet or spreadsheet program or our TFP PoolMath app to log and track your test results.

Additional reminders - use 10mL water sample and drop instructions/multipliers instead of more wasteful 25mL. Share your problems with us when they arise so we can respond to it quickly and hopefully avoid bigger, costlier problems. Staying above min FC, ideally in target range, is a bargain compared to letting it get infested with algae/bacteria/etc and require cleanup and potentially give people ear infections or worse. If you want to run with any of those DIY ideas, feel free to run with them here or start a new thread in the best fit forum for greater exposure. You can always post link to the other thread here, and to here over there - as well as quoting yourself so avoid retyping same stuff.

There were no real water quality issues besides low pH.

Main thing that thread was started on was initial chem add for a pool that just had it's first fill (for a first time pool owner).

Do I need to do an OCLT, no slam in progress or planned?

Right now it has been cloudy and rainy for a few days, don't think my Cl- is dropping much (though I was finally able to test it accurately for the first time last night Updated sig with new test kit info).

Since the pH add my TA has been consistent, dont figure that I'll be testing that much after maybe 1 more time, till a few rainy weeks have gone by (50 is fine right? dont wanna get to high and get pH creep)

Used 10 ML sample for FAS/DPD, can you do that for the TA/Hardness (FAS/DPD is Taylor, TA/Hardness is HTH)

Might pursue the Cl- adder once I get more time/money, also have a super low budget solar heater plan I am interested in pursuing when I get the time (already have mats (extra hoses)).

I figure I plan on overshooting Cl- most days (that I add) and then letting it sit a couple of days without adding when there is no bather load, really would rather use whole bottle amounts to take out user error in measuring.

The only concern with allowing FC to "swing" is allowing algae or contaminates to form (populate)
A plastic measuring cup is your best friend! =)
Norpro 4 Cup Plastic Measuring Cup - Walmart.com ours hangs out on top of the liquid chlorine bottle so it's never "lost" or taking up extra space

TA 50 is great as long as PH doesn't always need adjusting (https://www.troublefreepool.com/content/134-recommended-levels)

Whole bottle FC additions are fine as long as you 1) are okay with the increased loss to sun due to being outside the CYA/target sweet spot range) 2) add the next whole bottle before either falling under target or min, depending on how durable your pool proves to be before yielding to algae. 3) stay under shock FC per [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] 4) pour slow, whole minute per gallon in front of return jet

You may find that half bottle additions are a sweet win-win, depending on bather load.

Measuring cups are awesome too! I know I have a large plastic one I only use for MA. During winder I do measure bleach since I'm only losing 1.5 ppm/day.

Overnight Chlorine Loss Test is optional, just to find out if anything in the pool is using FC up when the sun isn't out. Think of it as an early detection and/or problem confirmation test. If your water is clear, and you are losing less than 4ppm per day on a day of full summer sun with no bathers, you're probably fine.

Plan was to wait till bottom of range and add a gal. Ideally after getting the FC/Day/amtSun trend down, only testing once every few days.

Idea is to make it so wife can do the adds, aka she refuses to measure out liquid Cl-.

If i have to measure, I think I'll just pay more and buy the quart or half gal size of bleach (or to save money buy a couple and refill the smaller bottles).

All this is moot untill I establish a baseline of Cl- Loss.

I tip and pour my jug. It is 2.5 gals. I know during the summer I need 1/3 of the jug each day. This comes from just what you are saying...........I learned my pool and it's needs. I keep a GREAT journal for 2 yrs that covered everything including the weather. I am not able to know what it will need in any given season and weather.

You are SO on the right track to a Trouble Free Pool!!!
