Pool Still Green After Opening

So you added enough chlorine to get it to 12ppm and 3 hours later you are at 1.6ppm?

Your water is clear.

Thinking.... either you have an outbreak and you are catching it right on time or we will want to potentially bump your cya up.

Don't mess with CYA just yet.

Lets get some other eyes on this.

Just got done my second one. FC was 1.6 so I had to add more bleach of course. Have I mentioned how having your pool in direct sunlight while performing this tests SUCKS? LOL And of course it had to be sunny today. It's just eating away at the bleach.

Are you sure you ever reached a FC 12ppm yet ? I can't see that being clarely stated in your results.

If you add enough it should be at 12 within 30mn.

Then check every 2 or 3 hrs and add bleach to stay at 12.

Yes. But looking now I think I may have effed the first test (well, the math) up and didn't put enough bleach in (think I was shy a gallon or two). But I know for sure this time around I did it right. And yes, the pool looks great, IMO. Here it is as of now.........

Yes, looks good.. ok ok.

It takes a little bit now that you are measuring out and using the Pool Math calculator. I know, I had similar experiences... so used to just "here throw all of this in it" lolol

Ok. so, I like the idea of testing again in 30mins, report that, and then we will wait for another test.

Are you testing every 2 hours or every 3? which ever it is, just include the 30min within that bigger timeframe. don't add to it.

So if you tested at 1, test at 1:30 and then again at 4 (assuming you are testing in 3hr increments).

I think I said that about as confusing as I could. You're welcome ;o)

I've been doing it every two hours as suggested in a previous post.

So, I pretty much should be out there testing it again right now since my last one was around 1/1:11? BRB..............LOL

I know later in the day I will be out for several hours until about 8pm. So, either 3 or 5, depending on when I leave, will be my last test until I get home later tonight. Hopefully things will be ok during that time.

How much have you been loosing each time?

Yes, your 8PM will be the last for the day and the beginning of your Overnight Chlorine Loss Test for tonight.

So, when you get home tonight test and add the chlorine to get you a little above 12. If Pool Math says 2 1/2 botles to get to 12, toss in three. Wait a half hour or so after you add the chlorine whit the pump running and test again. This will be your start Overnight Chlorine Loss Test number.

Still not clear to me when was the last time you were at 12ppm and what is the current level, but I guess you know it. ;)

If you have to leave for 5/6 hrs or more and you already know that you are consuming 10ppm in 2 hrs you can shoot for like 15/20 and retest after 6 hrs when back.

Edit : ok, a bit too slow to answer.

Well the first test I think I messed the math up and therefor didn't add enough bleach. So this second test I added what it said, waited 30 min and now it's saying I should add another gallon and 3 quarts more to get to 12.

I would add 2 gallons, retest in 30mins.

Odd. Are you sure you have the pool math calculator set up correctly for your gallons? Usually the rookie mistake that we put in more gallons than what we really have.

getting a lot of advice at once, I will defer and watch from here.

Ok, so it took 23 drops so, 4.6 is my FC right now. Should I add another gallon and 3 quarts in since that's how much away it says I am from 12?

Yeah everything seems to be set correctly. I mean, for the NOW part of the calculator if I got a result of 4.6 I would add that in and then 12 for the target, correct? And if that is correct then yeah, I seem to be doing it right. With the exception of my first test. Not sure where I went wrong but when I went back to look and did the math again, turns out I didn't add enough. I also did not go back out 30 min after adding the bleach that time. Didn't think I had to until my next test which was at 1:11. So, a combo of a few mistakes I guess.

I probably screwed this whole test up. And I don't think I was prepared with enough bleach either. I'm almost out and won't be able to get any until I come back later. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Nah, no problems. Hey, this is all a new chapter.

I didn't think to have you go test again after 30mins so it never came up.

All of this is just fun part of the job. Believe me and I know you already know, but IF this is your biggest problem all summer... you are #winning!

And, you SHOULD expect that this will be your biggest problem all summer.

I will set a reminder for late August to go dig up this thread so we can look back and laugh together!

reminder set for Sept 4th, Tuesday after Labor Day!

Yeah that's kinda what I was telling my son. He's here and keeps seeing me go through gallons and gallons of bleach and it seems like there is no end in site and he's all, "And you really think this is gonna be cheaper and less work, huh?" I'm like, that's what I'm hoping for. I told him I just have to get over this initial hurdle first and then it should be easier and less involved. But I seriously hope I didn't mess this up. I wasn't even sure how much bleach I should have on hand and thought what (I think 7 or 8 bottles) I did have would be plenty. Guess I was wrong. LOL

Hahaha, just make sure he is paying close attention. I don't want any midnight posts about how he and his buddies screwed up mom's pool and he needs ol funandsun's help! lolol

Of course I would help, but he will OWE me big time!

So 30 min later and it's still 4.6 like it was 30 min ago............but that obviously is still short on chlorine and not at the level I need it to be and I have no bleach left (thought I had 3 more bottles on the shelf but they were empty!!). I'm about to leave within the next hour for a doc appointment and I won't be able to bring any back until later. Makes me mad but nothing I can do. If I have to start over then so be it. I will of course test it later when I do get home and add what I need and just test again in the am. Thanks again everyone!! Gotta run and shower now and get out the door.

Well, to put the thing in perspective for your son - my fist slam lasted 10 days and I have thrown approx 80 gallons of bleach in the pool, so you can tell him this is just the beginning.

My cya was higher than yours though (~90, so I had to maintain a FC at 30+).

The hard part in the process is to stay strong when the whole family starts to doubt the method and beg you to stop.

Next time you go to the store buy all the bleach from the shelf, that will save you some time.

Now I am throwing one gallon every 3 to 4 days to maintain my FC at the correct level and everyone is happy that the pool has never been that clean and easy to maintain.

Also : there is something wrong in your process, either the pool is way bigger than you think it is, or the test is not done properly, or the bleach is not fresh, because it should be easy to make the FC spike at 12...

See you later, we will be here pondering the mysteries of your chlorine. lol

Be safe, see you soon!

Just had to sneak on one more time before going. LOL

WOW! That's a long time!!! I can only hope to ONLY need that much eventually. LOL

I've used several calculators including the one here and it even says I'm correct on the gallons of my pool.

And I assume I am doing the math correctly as I've been told I was last night and today. Although I think in the beginning I did mess up.

As for the bleach, I knew the ones I got were good. But this morning my son brought me 4 bottle from the dollar store. I just ran out and checked the empty bleach bottles he got and the numbers go something like this........and they're all similar...........what does it mean:

17 075 09:40 P4 VA-01

See above! SMH

Where did you get this bleach? Did it have anything on it to indicate expiration date?

I'm thinking this sounds like you may have gotten bleach that was old or maybe improperly stored... We may need to find you a better supplier.

I jokingly ribbed my son and claimed he tried sabotaging me with expired chlorine. LOL I assume the "17" on the bottles mean 2017. But I don't know. LOL
