We just moved to central Indiana from Georgia. We are looking for a lot to build a home and pool on. What would you suggest is the best direction for the backyard to face? We keep finding E and W facing backyards. I'm afraid of the pool being in the shade most of the day. Any suggestions?

My backyard and pool faces west. I somewhat regret it because I live in Phoenix, so the afternoon sun is brutal. In Indiana you may want the afternoon sun on your pool since your climate is much cooler most of the year. South is also a nice option as you get a steady amount of sun all day.

You'll want all the sun you can get most years. South is best followed by SW then W.

That said, it's nice to also have a shade structure by the pool too but hopefully it wouldn't shade the pool much if at all.

We are in Northern Illinois and our back yard faces south and a little east. We have a lot of tall trees but this works out pretty good. You want south facing for sure in Indiana.

Mine faces almost due South and we have a few trees left and right which block morning and evening sun. The best of all worlds as we get afternoon sun in a great location to not be too obtrusive. You can always block the sun with umbrellas and such but you can't add it. South for the win!

To Clarify: My house front faces due North - The backyard faces South.

We are in Florida, and are very (very!) happy that our pool is on the east side of our home.

Our previous house had the backyard facing west, and it was miserable out there for 5 months of the year. Now, we can actually enjoy our pool and patio area. When we bought this house, we were specifically looking for east facing backyards to build a pool. South would have been okay, but we did not want west at all.

I had this same dilemma when I had to pick a lot to build out house on. Here is what I went with. The lot lines in our neighborhood almost exactly line up with true North, South, East, West. I went with the front of the house facing South, This put the backyard facing North. In Indiana (and Ohio) this means that the portion of the patio closest to the house will always have some shade because the Sun never goes directly overhead (based on latitude). In the summer more sun, winter less sun on the patio. My pool sits far enough away from the house that the house never blocks the Sun. However trees in the yard could depending on their location. In the Winter, my driveway (facing south) is normally ice free because the sun hits it all day and melts the snow/ice. The family behind me who's driveway is on the north side, ALWAYS has snow/ice in their driveway. North side and low Sun isn't enough to melt the ice. I know that's "off-topic" but worth noting. My 2nd choice would be afternoon Sun, so backyard facing West. We normally use the pool in the afternoon / evening and as much as I hate the sun in my eyes, I'd rather it be sunny than in the shade all afternoon/evening. If you like to sunbathe, that would be even more important unless you are a morning swimmer.
The only other thing that would have swayed my choice would be privacy. If I could guarantee future privacy, I would have taken what was available. lol

Well, we ended up with a lot that faces NW. I am hoping as there are no trees or tall structures anywhere nearby and our home will be a ranch we will not have much shade on the pool and just enough shade on the patio. We will be starting to dig in the early spring. I will be excited to share pictures when it all starts!
Thank you everyone for the suggestions. It was so hard to find a lot that didn't face directly north!! Seemed all the good ones were gone!

Are you saying you didn't want a house facing North? I always thought that would be the best direction for the front to face. Anything from N to W would be great. My BIL's house faces almost due East and his backyard sucks to be in really anytime the sun always shines directly in your eyes. He also has a living room on the back of the house and can't watch anything with the blinds open since the TV gets total glare off the setting sun. Noon and later is bad for him. He put up a couple of sunsetter awnings and regular umbrellas and they are near useless since the sun sneaks in under them.

The more north you go the more you have a winter reason to have a lot that faces north IMHO. I had a medium incline in my southern facing lot from the street to the house and the driveway was badly shaded by the house and always icy in the winter.

If it's going to be a ranch you might want to consider adding solar ?? I'm sure the builder can figure out the math from the house how far out would be optimum for getting the pool out of the houses shadow. Good luck with your project.
