PVC Repair - plug hole left from chlorinator inlet fitting

Hi All,

I recently replaced my Hayward CL220 chlorinator with the Jandy Aquapure Ei SWG. Its up and running now for a over a month and working very well. Great decision... Very little maintenance since installed and water converted. My issue now is how to plug the hole remaining from the old chlorinator inlet (before the heater). If anyone has done this conversion you will know what I'm talking about. I have it rigged right now but I need a long term solution, other than clamping the old inlet hose. Is there a part I can buy to plug that 1/4 inch hole in the PVC? Do I need to replace that section of pipe? Use silicone repair wrap?

Of course any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I use a 1/2" PVC plug to temporarily seal the stenner adapter, but i can't find the same for 1/4".

If no plug is available, then you can just cut the PVC, glue on a coupler and put on a straight pipe. To make it easier I usually go far enough back to replace an elbow and replace one big section instead of working with 2 small sections.

I am curious - what is that SWCG rated for? You have a 35000 gallon pool. Be aware that if it is not rated for 60000 gallons you will need to run the SWCG alot to maintain appropriate chlorine levels based on your CYA.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll find this place quite useful I'm sure. Wish I knew about it 2 years ago when I first bout this house. I've learned how to maintain the pool on my own with the help of Google and YouTube.

The Jandy Aquapure Ei is rated for up to 35,000 gallons. I think my pool is actually 30,000. I have it set 1 less than max output. PPM of salt I tested this morning, came in at about 3400. I'm thinking I can add about 150 lbs of salt and I can lower the output so the chlorinator does not have to work so hard. Any thoughts?

Top priority now is to patch the hole in the PVC from the old chlorinator.

No need to fine tune salt. Salt content has no effect on how much chlorine the SWCG puts out, as long as it is in the range for it to work.

As I said, your SWCG is really undersized. You will need to run it at nearly 24 hours per day at 100% for parts of the summer. Be sure you have a high enough CYA to protect your chlorine or you may dip below minimum FC during the day.

I'm curious to know why you think its undersized? The Aquapure Ei is rated for pools up to 35k gallons. Its been running for about 6 weeks and my pool has never been so clean. Zero algae and the chlorine levels have consistently been in range. I run it for 8 hrs a day along with my filter pump. Not a single issue so far.

That is great it is working well for you -- but now for some math.
The SWCG you have can produce 0.93 lb of chlorine per day. In your pool, that is 3.7 ppm FC in your 30000 gallon pool. That is with the unit operating at 100%, 24 hours.

Most normal pools use 2-4 ppm of FC per day due to sunlight, bather load, and organics that naturally get in the pool. This is in the summer.

You stated you are running it 8 hours per day, I assume at 100% rate. So your pool is getting 1.2 ppm FC per day from the SWCG. It is great that is working. But be aware, that is less than the normal, unless the pool is covered the majority of the time.

TFP recommends sizing a SWCG at least 2X your pool volume.
