Chlorine question

I now have a Coleman 18'×4' steel framed ag pool. Running a 16" sand filter pump (3/4hp) rated at 3000gph in conjunction with a Summer Waves salt water generator. I admit I dont know about the quality if this SW system, as I've never used it before. My wife got this one.
Okay, here's the question...My system is giving a high salt code. That I don't doubt is correct as I realized I did put around 80lbs too much salt to open pool. Will the salt level (high or low) affect the chlorine levels? I feel like my chlorine levels have to be low, ie slick sides and bottom and yellowish discoloring on bottom. Clears up when I add three gallons or so of pool chlorine. I thought the generator would proute enough chlorine.

Some systems stop production if the salt level isn't correct. Not sure about your particular model though. Hopefully someone with more experience sill be along shortly.

Which test kit are you using? TF-100 or K2006C?

The cell either generates chlorine or not, it puts out a certain amount of chlorine gas regardless of salt level within the recommended range.

Have you verified your FC level?

What is the actual salt level?

What is your CYA level?

How often do you test?

Which test kit are you using?

I have the same SWG, and it needs to run about 7 hours right now to maintain my FC level. I actually have two units running in parallel, one for 3 hours and one for 4 hours, this lets me reduce the run time of my 1.5HP pump.

Hi timitot.

Your system doesn't produce chlorine based on the amount of salt in the pool (provided there is enough). It sounds like your system might just not be producing enough. There could be a couple reasons.

Just want to check because your signature says you're using an Intex 54601EG SWG. did you replace that with the summer waves model? Do you know the model number of the Summer Waves? if it's the one I found online, it produces 6.5g of chlorine per hour, which works out to roughly 0.34lbs per day.

So from there, it depends on what percentage you run your SWG at, and how long your run your pump. For example, the average pool has a FC demand of 2-4 ppm per day. lets go on the higher side of 4. assuming the assumptions are correct, you'd have to run your pump 15hrs each day to replace 4ppm FC per day. If the model is not the one I'm looking at, then that will change.

It also sounds like you have algae in your pool, that you'll need to do a SLAM to clear up. I'd suggest checking out the SLAM article in pool school. If you're not sure, you should perform an OCLT (overnight Chlorine Loss Test) to check if you need to slam. For either of these, you're going to need one of the recommended test kits. You signature doesn't say how you're testing your water. That's going to be the first thing you need to address.

If you have an approved test kit, post a full set of results here and people will help you. Strips, an OTO drop test, and pool store results aren't going to cut it with the TFP method.

Good catch, I was going by the one listed in the signature.

If that is the SWG (0.34lbs/day) it will need to run 12 hours just to make 3ppm. Most 'clean' pool consume 2-4ppm of FC daily.
