My pool is not even a year old and I am getting a "check system - examine cell" message on my SWG display. Is this something I can do myself (if so how?) or should I call the pool company? I am tempted to clear the message and see if it comes back.

I believe it comes on after every 500 hours of operation and to clear it hold the diagnostic button down for several seconds.
You should remove the cell and inspect it for scaling as that can cause issues with the cell. If there is scaling and you need help on how to clean it there are many threads that go over that procedure.
Thank you! I will look up in the manual how to check the cell. I just figured it wouldn't tell me if that was an automatic alert after a set number of hours or if it indicated a problem. Now that I know it isn't scary I will get the manual out this weekend and check the cell. Fingers crossed for no scaling!
you may be better off it does turn out to be scaling, since that will usually just require a quick cleaning of the cell (usually by soaking it in a combination of acid and water in a 1:4 ratio) and that's it. If it's not scaling, there could be another problem including possibly needing a replacement cell.
