New Pool Build Los Angeles

I think I will stop making milestone announcements regarding my scheduling....because something always changes. I received a notice on Saturday from FilmLA, that my neighbor 3 houses down is having a movie scene shot in the interior and exterior of his house, on the same day my gunite is scheduled. The notice also stated parking permits were issued for the production vehicles right in front of my house and my neighbors on my block. (Nowhere for the concrete truck to park.) :grrrr:

I called my PM, explained the situation and she said she would do her best, but with this short notice, I will probably be put back at the end of the line, mid-July. So in the interim, I called the location manager's number (provided by FilmLA) and explained my situation. He was very understanding, but even if they left room for the concrete truck, the noise from the pumper would prevent them from filming. I explained I didn't want to have to wait 2 more weeks for gunite, and he completely understood that too, and said normally, he would be able to compensate me for my trouble, but since this is a short independent film, he doesn't have the budget to do that. But as I was speaking to him my PM called, and said she was able to get my gunite rescheduled for Thursday. The location manager was extremely happy and thanked me over and over again.

I mentioned to the location manager that I had a commercial shot in my home a couple of years ago, and he said he loves filming in my neighborhood, and would like to come by my house on Wednesday to photograph my home's interior (and later the pool, when it's finished) to be considered for future projects he may work on. By the way, this location manager mentioned said he just finished up a movie for (Oscar winning actor), and he's also the location manager for a very popular prime-time ABC TV show. So, maybe something good will come out of this.

Fantastic Tony! Sorry about the delay with your gunite, but maybe you just figured out how to pay for the pool! [emoji4] We work with the film industry here a good deal and have always had the best experiences!

Hi AmyJo, that would be fantastic! I was actually in a bar in downtown LA a few weeks ago, and saw my commercial air again. It was for NBAtickets.com. It's been over two years, and it's still being aired. The one-time money was great. Too bad there are no residuals.

OH Tony! I was reading this holding my breath for you! WOW I bet your heart dropped when you first saw and heard that!

Oh that would be neat if they used your home/pool for a future movie!

Hi Kim, Yeah, I was like, there is no way I am changing my gunite schedule, but I didn't want to put a negative on it, so I decided it was best to try to work with them. Having your home used for a film, TV show, or commercial, can be very lucrative. It can also be very nerve-wrecking. There are literally dozens of people all over your house and yard, and miles of cables going everywhere. When they shot the commercial at my house, I had just completed a 4 month renovation, and not knowing what to expect, I thought my home was going to be destroyed. Of course, it all worked out and everyone was very respectful of my home. I would seriously consider doing it again. As AmyJo stated, depending upon how long the shoot is, they can pay a significant amount. I've heard in the $5K to $50K range for long-term. The interesting thing about my commercial was the shots were so tight, if I didn't know it had been shot in my kitchen and living room, I would not have recognized my own house.

That's really cool! Please keep us posted! I'm so far removed from any of that - I get a little star struck sometimes. You and your home may be as close as I get! Lol!

See, there I go - stars in my eyes. Almost forgot to say I'm glad your gunite could be rescheduled for the next day. (the real reason we're all here, right?!)

Thanks Suz...It's interesting, I've lived in LA for 30 years now. Originally from Washington, D.C. but I have never been star struck. But maybe that is because I work in the industry. Of course, when my family comes to visit, they are always asking me about certain celebrities, which I really don't know any at a personal level. I tell them they put their pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else....the only difference is they paid 3 or 4 times more for those pants. But seriously, what I love most about LA is the weather. :sun: If I could take it back east with me, I would be there in a heartbeat.

Once in a great while we get some of those days I imagine must be what Californians rave about - crisp, dry air, warm sun, maybe a gentle breeze. And I think, "Yep, I get it! I could stand that for most of the year."

Looking forward to seeing your pool project completed!! If you are happy with the end result, I would love to get a referral. I'm also in LA I live in Silverlake and am starting the bidding process to have a pool installed!

Hi tfireball1, Welcome to TFP!

I can provide you with my PB's name now, since my build is still 6-8 weeks from being completed....:( PM me and I can provide more details.

Glad it all worked out thats great news. My parents live in Malibu and our neighbor's house is used a lot in movies and commercials. Because they need somewhere to park on our windy street they often rent my parent's big driveway for the trucks or catering. A few years ago the ABC show Revenge filmed down the street, so it was great having fairly steady money from them. Sure helps the inconvenience of the whole when you're getting paid. ;)

Gunite is finally complete!!! :whoot:

The first truck arrived just after 6:00 am. And they were shooting gunite by 7:15 am. The gunite crew came all the day from the High-Desert area, which is about 1 1/2 hours from where I live. These guys were pros. It was fascinating to what how exacting and precise they were. They definitely knew what they were doing. I watched them pretty much the entire time. I'm also glad I was there, so that I could direct them on a few things that were not specified in the plans, as opposed to them making a decision for me that I would not be happy with.

The weather in LA was pretty moderate today (@ 74-76 degrees). :sun: It started with a typical "June Gloom" morning, which is when the sun stays hidden behind the clouds until around 11:00-12:00. But by 10:30 the sun was starting to come out and that's about the same time my pool is in full sun. That's also when I noticed the guys starting to sweat. Fortunately, I followed the advice of fellow forum users and provided Gatorade and water to all. The owner was very appreciative and thanked me several times. He also made sure all of his guys were hydrated. (It makes me wonder what these guys would have done if I had not provided cold beverages.) They were finished, cleaned up, and out of here by noon...off to another job.

By the way, I was required [by LA city] to have a deputy inspector on-site the entire time while they shot the gunite. He was there to confirm the PSI was the correct specification, and also that the gunite thickness was as specified. I also had to pay the deputy inspector a $350 fee, payable directly to him on-site. The interesting thing he was buddies with the gunite crew. But he did do his job, because he called out a couple of issues that they promptly resolved. All in all, it was a great experience....less the $350. :pth:

Now, what you've all really been waiting for.....PICS!!!

A lot of equipment.

Make sure to ask any and all questions you might have no matter how small! We have all been where you are at one point.

It is also time for you to ask your PB what test kit he will be giving you. Let us know so we can fill in any holes it might have.

So........did they have any suggestions for tweak or changes they thought you might want/like?

I am glad you were there to fill in what was not on the plans.
