Just Bought A House With A Pool...Where to Begin?

Hi Guybrush3pwood,
Just for a little encouragement, I bought a house with a pool that was neglected for several years. When I started I got a very good education, the tuition for that education was over a thousand dollars. What I learned was do not trust pool stores. (although one pool store that also built pools was pretty good in coming out and explaining my equipment to me and how the plumbing worked) but another guy came out and told me I broken pipes underground and I needed to get a backhoe in and dig up concrete. In the end from reading this site and how things really worked I determined I needed a spider gasket and I had broken laterals in the filter, fixed them for about $130, a week later by following this method I had clear water and was swimming. So just because you call in an outside company you have no guarantee unless you have it in writing. I do feel you pain though, I am also very impatient and want it all yesterday and came close to bulldozing the pool in. The fact that you wife does not want it does not help I am sure. But if you methodically work through and try to understand what you are being told to do, you will get it. you have had a rough time with the CYA, and from what I have read believe there was either an error on initial reading or later and that has caused a lot of confusion. Also, I would be sure to try and get out all the junk on bottom, while you are waiting as this will speed process. I believe the advice you are getting is solid and I know Kimkats and Texas splash are very knowledgeable. By the way do you have well water to fill the pool or from the city?

The handle on the pump is a shutoff valve... good for clearing gunk in the basket... turn off pimp, shut it off and pull the sight window off. If you have a shut off going to the return line, shut that off too... gonna get messy cuz there's some pressure in there... might move it to back wash for the time being so the water goes out instead of in your face

The lid turns to the left, has a hook on each side of the lid that hooks over plastic tabs on each side of the basket housing. You turn it about an inch or so and it will pull up to come off. There is a O-Ring on the lid that is probably dry and stuck. Not the friendliest design to get open, I have one identical on my old pump.

I assume you closed the black handle valve before trying to open the pump basket? It is closed in the pic and would not allow water from the pool to get to the pump.

pump needs to circulate water when it is turned on, it is essential for SLAM to work as chemicals need to be distributed over. Do you see water moving through the basket? Do you feel flow from returns?

one thing seems odd is your high CYA concentration. If your pool is 14,700 gal 4lb of granular CYA should've brought you to less than 40ppm, 70 ppm seems too high. Either you had > 0 at the beginning but didn't run the test correctly or your pump is not circulating water as it should and you happened to take a sample from the spot with high CYA concentration or you overestimated your pool water volume. It's a simple math: 14,700 gal x 8.34 lb/gal = 122,600 lb of water in your pool. When you added 4lb of CYA its concentration should've become: 4 / 122,600 approx 33 ppm (parts per million) as PoolMath predicted :). I just don't see how it could shoot to 70 ppm. Please re- check everything as ppl on this site work off your numbers, they can only operate with data you provide. I know for sure there's no algae which ever made through SLAM, it's not biologically possible.

I have no idea how it got to where it was. I only put in what I was told and tested for what I was told.

The pump thing still worries. Not sure what's going on with it.

What tests should I take this morning? Won't matter too much since I don't have any bleach left to put in it, but we can at least see where we stand.

The water is looking lighter this morning.

Test for..
FC
CC

Need to see what you level is since you dumped in 3 gallons

If its getting lighter, it is working. If you need to keep the FC elevated, that is fine. You aren't swimming so its not as detrimental as most who continue to use the pool while slamming

IF you have time today, read thru pool school.. Itll help you understand why we are taking the steps we are

Sorry you are getting discouraged! We aren't trying to confuse or make this tougher or take longer than it needs. I brought up the CYA because I noticed it had been missed. The dosing you were doing was still working, just not as effectively as getting up to shock level for your CYA. The Chlorine/CYA relationship is the big point in the TFPC method. I hope you can forgive us for the miss and keep at it using this method. It may seem a little like voodoo right now but as you read more in Pool School and keep running and getting comfortable with the tests, it will click.

FYI, the 3 gallons you put in gave you a 17+ppm bump which probably got you pretty close to shock level! If you are not too disheartened, grab some more bleach on the way home today cause you just have to maintain that level now that you got it up there!
