Preface - As the new Pentair IntelliCenter Automation Control System moves further into the mainstream of pool automation, there appears to be an increase in the amount of just basic questions recently regarding IntelliCenter installation, configurations and standard operation.

Most of these basic requests for information come from folks that are building a pool for the first time and who may looking to incorporate the new Pentair IntelliCenter Control System within that build.

It seems that some of the issues encountered for many of these new owner/builders is due to the difficulty in searching for and locating the applicable installation, owner and quick reference guides online, as well as locating other useful information in order to make important decisions regarding the IntelliCenter, prior to their new pool installation. In addition, many of the professional pool builders are not yet well versed in the IntelliCenter, to include its installation and functionality and consequently are of little help for these owners.

Lastly, much of the Pentair documents are difficult to understand at times, especially for the new pool owners and many of the terms and definitions used in the IntelliCenter documentation, are not always easily understood and interpreted and can also be conflicting.

Given these challenges for new pool owner/builders, I thought it might be beneficial to attempt to provide some basic general information, definitions and explanations to the information found within the various IntelliCenter documents and to also provide links to the applicable documentation and other relevant information relating to Pentair’s newest pool automation system.

NOTE: The following information is provided as a general and informative overview only. It’s NOT intended as a substitute for thoroughly reading and observing any warnings, cautions, notes and guidelines that are contained within the applicable Pentair documentation. Links to these documents are provided below (Links to Applicable Documentation and Additional IntelliCenter Information) and certainly should be referenced for more detailed information regarding proven industry-standard practices, IntelliCenter installation, set-up and programming.

1. Pentair IntelliCenter Overview -
The Pentair IntelliCenter provides automation control over your pool/spa equipment to include pumps, lights, heaters, cleaners, sanitation and chemistry control devices, water features, valve actuators, solar heating, spa blowers and pool covers. In addition, the IntelliCenter Control System can be used to automate other powered items as well, such as landscape lighting, patio and gazebo lights, etc.

The IntelliCenter was first introduced to the consumer pool equipment market in the 4th quarter of 2018.

The IntelliCenter Automation Control System can be programmed and controlled remotely from virtually anywhere while utilizing a PC/laptop computer, iPhone, iPad, Surface, Android mobile device and most other mobile digital devices. In addition, optional wired and wireless remote control devices can also be utilized to control the IntelliCenter but these optional control devices are typically not needed in most installations.

Most of these user interfaces allow a user to control most of their pool and spa functions from virtually anywhere that internet/cellular connectivity exists.

The IntelliCenter is also compatible with the Amazon Echo “Alexa” virtual assistant, allowing voice commands to control pool functionality (see also: IntelliCenter and the Amazon Echo (Alexa) app.)

The IntelliCenter Control System is a mostly scalable / modular system. It can also be used in combination with other popular home automation systems as well (see: IntelliCenter Home Automation Integration and Control) with varying degrees of complexity and requiring varying degrees of “IT knowledge” as well.

With the IntelliCenter, a user can create and customize automated schedules with multiple start and stop times to control filter and spa jet pumps, lights, heaters, spa blowers and other pool devices and accessories. The IntelliCenter system contains several historical usage data features that provide a convenient way to help the pool owner conserve energy.

Popular “bundled” systems can be ordered or in the case of “non-standard” installations, systems can be built “á la carte”. See: IntelliCenter Bundled and Component Parts List, for breakdowns of bundled and “á la carte” components.

Legacy and newer EasyTouch and IntelliTouch Control Systems can be upgraded to the IntelliCenter Control System as well and are covered in more detail in Section 9. below.

2. IntelliCenter Features - The following are the major features of the Pentair IntelliCenter Control System as somewhat outlined in the Pentair documentation.
  • 4” x 3” capacitive touch sensitive color screen at the control panel which also incorporates a manual and automatic day/night color screen mode.
  • Remote connectivity is provided by either wired or wireless (Wi-Fi) ethernet connections.
  • Multi-function schedules and programs with adjustable scheduling timers for easy system scheduling.
  • 100 schedules are provided. Filter Pump/Auxiliary Power Circuits, Feature Circuits and Circuit Groups (macros) can be assigned to these schedules.
  • 5, 8 or 10 Power Circuits (for line-voltage items (240 Vac or 120 Vac) such as Filter, Spa and water features pumps, lights etc. Up to 40 Filter Pump/Aux Circuits can be configured with the use of up to three expansion enclosures (i10X)
  • 32 Feature (virtual) Circuits which allow control over other items such as speeds/flows on Pentair VS/VF/VSF pumps, control for valve actuators, heater(s) control and covers.
  • 16 Circuit Groups: Ability to assign FLTR/AUX power circuits and Feature Circuits to these programmable macros controlled by a single button or scheduled program.
  • Supports up to 16 IntelliFlo VS, VF and VSF pumps including 8 speeds/flow settings per pump (as applicable). Also supports two-speed pumps.
  • Supports standard pool/spa lighting as well as IntelliBrite, GloBrite, MicroBrite and MagicStream LED color lights and light shows. In addition, other light manufactures that emulate the IntelliBrite colors and shows are also supported.
  • Support for two valve actuators (“P” models (A&B) or four Valve Actuators (“PS” models) (Intake, Return and A and B valve circuits). Expandable up to 10 valve actuators with the use of the optional IntelliCenter Valve Expansion Module.
  • Support for an optional Indoor Control Panel and/or Outdoor Control Panel, Wireless Hand-Held Remote. Also supports up to four Spa-Command and iS10 Spa-Side Remotes, and two iS4 and one QuickTouch II Wireless Spa-Side Remotes (typically not required).
  • IntelliChlor Salt Chlorine Generator (SCG) integration. Supports one IntelliChlor per Load/Power Center or Expansion Enclosure.
  • IntelliChem Controller support
  • Spa Manual Heat Function
  • Support for two bodies of water
  • Spa-Side Control Enable/Disable
  • Solar Heating Option/Support
  • 16 Heat Pump Support: RS-485 Support and Heat Pump Cooling Support (if applicable).

3. IntelliCenter Specific Definitions and Descriptions – The following definitions are provided in order to minimize confusion with some of the terms or definitions used within the Pentair documentation.

Circuit Breakers:​
NOTE: I am providing the following as general information ONLY. This information as well as any other electrical information provided in this guide, is not intended to be instructional or as an installation guide for the novice in any way. If you are not qualified and proficient in electrical installation practices and procedures, please consult with a licensed professional that IS qualified and proficient in swimming pool electrical installations.
IMG_5490.JPGLine-voltage circuit breakers utilized in the IntelliCenter Control System are manually operated electrical switches designed to provide a means of removing power from a particular circuit. They are also automatically operated electrical switches designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit. The circuit breakers normally used in the IntelliCenter Load Center are designed to interrupt current flow either, after a fault is detected or as a means to manually switch off power to a particular circuit.​
Electrical power (150 amps maximum) is provided from the main house electrical panel to the Load Center. These circuit breakers then distribute electrical power from the Load Center bus-bar to the electrical devices that are connected to and controlled by the IntelliCenter.​
Each IntelliCenter Load Center can support up to ten (10) circuit breaker spaces (5) double-pole 240 Vac breakers or (10) single-pole 120Vac breakers or any combination thereof.​
Circuit breakers are not included with the IntelliCenter Load Center and must be purchased separately.​
Pool equipment such as most pool pumps, heaters, blowers, etc., typically utilize 240 Vac double-pole breakers. Pool equipment such as pool/spa lights, low-voltage lighting transformers and other miscellaneous pool equipment typically utilize 120 Vac single-pole breakers.​
Line-voltage circuit breakers utilized in the IntelliCenter Control System should only be the approved and recommended circuit breakers that are specified in the IntelliCenter Automation System for Pool and Spa Installation Guide.​

NOTE: It is recommended that when using any Pentair IntelliFlo Pumps in conjunction with an IntelliCenter installation, the Pentair PA220GF GFCI double-pole circuit breaker(s) should be utilized instead of the similar Siemens QF220 GFCI breaker. The Pentair PFG (PA220GF) breakers are noted to possess a higher quality control and are designed to help prevent the GFCI circuit breakers from falsely tripping due to IntelliFlo pump harmonics (courtesy: Jimrahbe). There are2020-02-14_14-47-57.jpg also three (3) low-voltage circuit breakers included with the IntelliCenter Control System Load and Power Centers.​
- 18V, 5 Amps provided for the Control System​
- 24V, 4 Amps provided for any connected Valve Actuators​
- 12V, 12 Amps provided for the optional Salt Chlorine Generator Transformer (if applicable)​
Circuits, Auxiliary or “Aux” Power: A controllable On/Off power circuit for line-voltage items (240 Vac or 120 Vac), such as pumps (see the NOTE2020-02-17_21-17-39.jpg regarding IntelliFlo Pumps in “Power Relays” below), lights etc. Typically, users can select IntelliCenter Personality Kit models that support either 5, 8 or 10 Pump/Auxiliary type Power Circuits.​
In addition, up to 40 of these circuits can be configured with the use of up to three expansion enclosures (i10X) if necessary for pool/spa builds incorporating multiple filter/spa pumps and/or with multiple lighting and water features.​









Circuits, Feature: Feature/Individual Circuits are programmable “virtual” circuits that can control low voltage type items and features such as pump speeds/flows, spillway, valve actuators, 2020-02-17_21-26-01.jpgheater control functions, etc.​
Up to 32 of these feature circuits can be created and programmed from a pull-down selectable list or they can be customized.​
These “circuits” are not to be confused with auxiliary (“Aux”) power circuits that actually do control the On/Off features of line-voltage circuits such as pumps (see the NOTE regarding IntelliFlo Pumps in “Power Relays” below), blowers and 110 Vac lights or low voltage lighting transformers.​

Circuit Groups (macros): The Circuit Groups feature allows for multiple Auxiliary Power Circuits and Feature (virtual) Circuits to be grouped together and assigned to one On/Off button that is 2020-02-17_21-31-00.jpgdisplayed on the Home screens and Features screens. Circuit Group names are customizable. Circuits that are grouped together in these “macros” can be switched On/Off from one button in the Features (Circuits), Lights (circuits) or the Home screens.​
A maximum of 16 Circuit Groups (macros) can be programmed.​
However, if necessary, it is possible to create “Nested Groups” which is a group of circuits (macros) within another group of circuits, as long as they are from the same major grouping (Light or Circuit).​



Egg Timer: The “Egg Timer” feature allows for a specified time delay (hrs./mins.) for a circuit to function, once it is turned on manually. Typically a user will tap the Egg Timer button to display the Hours and Minutes button. Then tap the Hours and Minutes buttons to select a manual time-out from 0 to 23 hrs. 59 mins. for the circuit.​

Expansion Kit: A kit that includes additional FLTR/AUX power circuits and relays to an existing Personality Kit. Requires a Load Center or Power Center for each Expansion Kit. Models i5X (P/N 521033) and i10X (P/N 521034), offer five or ten additional circuits.​
Each IntelliCenter Control System Expansion Kit requires an additional Load (P/N521213) or Power Center (P/N 521214). Up to three Expansion Kits and Load or Power Centers may be added to a system, for control of up to 38 Auxiliary Circuits (40 auxiliary circuits’ i10x).​

Freeze Protection: A circuit with freeze protection “enabled”, circulates water to protect pipes from freezing if the outdoor air temperature sensor detects the temperature is nearing freezing (below 36° F).​
GFCI Convenience Receptacle (Optional): A standard “single-gang” “knockout” is provided on the right side of the IntelliCenter Load or Power Center. This knockout is provided for an approved 2020-02-10_19-09-22.jpgIMG_5508.JPGGFCI single-gang electrical​
receptacle where a rainproof cover or rainproof receptacle cover is required. This GFCI receptacle can be used as a convenient temporary power source at the pool equipment pad.​
In my personal installation, I also use the “load-side” connectors on the back of the GFCI receptacle to provide GFI power to my pool equipment pad convenience light switch.​
The receptacle and receptacle cover are NOT included with the purchase of the Load/Power Center.​





High Voltage Compartment: The High-Voltage Compartment is the large lower-right compartment in the Load or Power Center designated for all line-voltage (240Vac and 120Vac) wiring to IMG_5495.JPGinclude line-voltage conduit knockouts, compression screw lugs for the incoming power leads, circuit breakers (Load Center only), neutral and ground bus bars, transformers, relays, and a GFCI convenience receptacle “knockout”.​
WARNING: Electrical power should always be removed (breaker switched off at the house main circuit breaker panel that feeds the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center), prior to any work being performed on any components within the high-voltage compartment of the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center. Consult with a licensed and qualified swimming pool electrician if you are not qualified in these procedures.​

High Voltage Cover Panel: A High Voltage Cover Panel (also referred to as a “Dead Front” panel) is provided to ensure that the line-voltage circuits are protected from the possibility of short 2020-02-16_14-27-42.jpgcircuits and damage to components and more importantly, that users are protected from electrical shock when the Load/Power Center door is open for any reason.​
There are ten knockouts provided for circuit breakers on the cover panel (Load Center only). These knockouts are removed predicated on the amount of circuit breakers that are required for the IntelliCenter installation (not applicable for Power Centers).​
The High Voltage Cover Panel is secured at the bottom by three tabs and secured at the top by two ¼” retaining hex-screws.​
WARNING: Electrical power should always be removed (breaker switched off at the house main circuit breaker panel that feeds the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center), prior to removing the High Voltage Cover Panel for any reason. Consult with a licensed and qualified swimming pool electrician if you are not qualified in these procedures.​

IntelliCenter Control System Transformer: The IntelliCenter Control System Transformer is included and installed in either an IntelliCenter Load Center or Power Center. The 2020-02-11_21-04-23.jpgsystem transformer is mounted in the high voltage compartment just above the IntelliChlor transformer (if installed).​
The purpose of the IntelliCenter Control System Transformer is simply to convert normal line-voltage ac power to a voltage useable by the electronic components of the IntelliCenter control system. The transformer receives line-voltage ac power via one of the line-voltage circuit breakers (preferably not the Filter Pump Breaker), converts that power to a usable voltage and then delivers it to the Motherboard connector labeled “power” via 4 conductors (one through the 5-amp low-voltage circuit breaker).​
The IntelliCenter Control System Transformer can utilize either 240 Vac or 120 Vac. It is pre-wired at the factory for 120 Vac service. It can be converted to 240 Vac in accordance with the instructions and warnings located on pp13/14 of the IntelliCenter Control System Installation Guide.​







IntelliCenter Daughter Card (Personality Card): An IntelliCenter Daughter Card is an additional circuit card that “slide-connects” to the left of the Motherboard. The daughter card defines the additional “personality” of the IntelliCenter System (if applicable) when any of the following exists:​

- When there is more than one body of water, i.e. Pool and Spa.​
- When a Pool and Spa are present in the installation and each utilize their own separate filtration systems.​
The daughter card will include 3 or 5 additional auxiliary line-voltage type power circuits depending on the model and one additional iS4 remote connection (J2). SPA, INTAKE and RETURN valve actuator circuits are provided on “PS” models. The “D” model includes several duplicate circuits and is further detailed below in Section 8. below.​
There are six different daughter or “personality” cards available (i8P, i10P, i5PS, i8PS, i10PS, i10D), all of which can be purchased bundled within Personality “Kits” or the applicable daughter card can be purchased separately, if a user determines that more line-voltage type auxiliary relay circuits are required at a later time.​

IntelliCenter Control System Firmware: The IntelliCenter firmware is an updateable set of instructions programmed in the flash ROM device on the IntelliCenter motherboard that essentially instructs the IntelliCenter how to behave.​
As Pentair modifies those “instructions” or develops new sets of instructions, new firmware versions are created. Those firmware versions can be “pushed” via automatic firmware upgrades to the users control system or they can be uploaded to the system manually via the USB flash/thumb drive port provided on the front of the IntelliCenter Outdoor Control Panel.​
When Pentair establishes a need for a temporary “quick-fix” to one or many users issues that may have been discovered, Pentair Tech Support can provide the user with a “beta” firmware update version in order to correct the issue in a timely manner. When those beta versions have been properly “vetted” by the software engineers for full compatibility with all associated systems and components, then eventually, publicly-released versions are then released for the general IntelliCenter community.​
The latest firmware updates can be acquired automatically through the IntelliCenter system or downloaded via the Pentair IntelliCenter Firmware Update Download Portal and then uploaded to the system manually via a USB flash/thumb drive while following the provided user “prompts”.​
IntelliCenter Personality Kit: A set of IntelliCenter related parts that define the capability of an overall IntelliCenter Control System. Includes the IntellliCenter Outdoor Control Panel, i5P Motherboard, specific daughter card (if applicable) temperature sensors, two IntelliValve Valve Actuators (on “PS” models only), and any additional relays as applicable. IntelliChlor models can also be bundled. See Section 8. below and the IntelliCenter Bundled and Component Parts List for further detailed information.​
IntelliCenter Mobile App: The IntelliCenter Control System mobile app, provides for a means for the user to program and control the IntelliCenter via an iOS or Android IMG_5515.PNGmobile device.​
The IntelliCenter Mobile App features the HOME, POOL(s), FEATURES, LIGHTS, CHEMISTRY, PUMPS, SCHEDULES and HISTORY pages.​
It also provides features that allow for SETTINGS (programming), the management of other systems for pool professionals, the ability to enable spa-side remotes and and an on-line manual.​
It also features the typical “ABOUT” screen that indicates panel configuration information, iOS or Android version and the current IntelliCenter Control System firmware version. Apps can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Play Store as applicable.​
The Mobile App allows the user the ability to connect "locally" (local access (IP address) or remotely (via the Pentair servers).​
The Mobile App versions (not to be confused with the system firmware versions) are updated remotely via the Pentair IntelliCenter servers.​
IntelliCenter Motherboard (i5P): The IntelliCenter Motherboard is the standard or common circuit board utilized in all IntelliCenter Control System installations and is 2020-02-11_23-18-40.jpgincluded as part of all IntelliCenter Personality Kits. The Motherboard is mounted on the rear of the touch screen, on the back side of the fold-down Outdoor Control Panel.​
The motherboard contains all of the necessary and significant sub-systems to include the central processor, the chipset’s input/output functions, memory and memory controllers, interface connectors and the male slide connector on the left-hand side of the board for daughter and other optional circuit cards.​
The motherboard defines the basic system capability and alone, features complete “i5P functionality” supporting “one body of water”, filter pump circuit + four AUX circuits.​
The motherboard includes a filter pump relay circuit plus 4 additional auxiliary (AUX) relay circuits, Valve A & B connections, heater control – (J2 (gas) and electronic (EHTR)), solar relay output, 2-speed pump relay output, water, air and solar sensor connections (J15), two COM ports (J4/J5), Ethernet port, iS4 remote port (J8) and a 24V Wi-Fi bridge power connection.​
The motherboard can accept any of the six various daughter or “personality” cards via the female slide connectors on the right-hand side of the cards in order to accommodate more complex pool/spa installations.​
NOTE: It appears that the IntelliCenter Motherboard features the Texas Instruments AM3354 1-GHz Sitara™ ARM® Cortex-A8 32‑Bit RISC processor which allows for image and graphics processing, peripherals and industrial interface options such as EtherCAT and PROFIBUS. Further details on the processor can be found here: TI AM3354 (Courtesy: @mcqwerty)​
IntelliCenter Outdoor Control Panel: The IntelliCenter Control System Outdoor Control Panel is mounted in the upper portion of the IntelliCenter Control System Load or 2020-02-12_15-10-32.jpgPower Center. It is a rectangular plastic housing that is mounted in front of the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center low-voltage compartment.​
The control panel is mounted by four ¼” hex-screws. The two upper screws can be loosened (non-removable), to allow the control panel to fold down utilizing a flexible hinge. This feature allows access to the electronic components mounted on the back side of the panel.​
The control panel components include the color touch control panel, USB port and includes a RESET, Settings and Service Icon press buttons. The control panel also features a “cut-out” window that allows for easy access to the IntelliCenter low-voltage circuit breakers. 2020-02-12_15-13-22.jpg
The backside of the control panel allows for mounting of the motherboard and any daughter or expansion cards (as applicable). Up to four (4) additional circuit cards can be mounted.​
IntelliCenter Schedule: An internal IntelliCenter activity that allows for users to create and customize automated, routine, multi-functional, time-based events through 2020-02-18_0-54-12.jpgprograms with multiple start and stop times to control Power Circuits (FLTR/Aux), Feature Circuits or Circuit Groups, that control filter and spa jet pumps, lights, heaters and other pool equipment devices or accessories.​
From the Schedule screen, a user can add, delete, edit, enable and disable schedules. Tap the Add button (+) to add a schedule. To delete a program, tap the program from the list. Tap the Trash Can icon to delete the program from the list.​
100 schedules are allowed which can be created and modified through the Outdoor Control Panel, IntelliCenter Web-Client, iOS or Android apps and some of the other optional Remote Control devices.​












IntelliCenter Touch Screen: The IntelliCenter features a 4” x 3” “capacitive-touch” (glass) color touch screen which is simply a control display that uses the conductive touch 2020-02-12_15-33-29.jpgof a human finger for input as an interface to the IntelliCenter Control System.​
The touch screen can be set for daylight, or nighttime optimal viewing. It can also be set for automatic “transitional” viewing as well. An adjustable screen “time-out” delay is provided.​
When the touch screen is initially touched, the color screen will illuminate and display the IntelliCenter Home Screen which displays the current Pool, Spa, Features and Lights icons. An icon is touched in order to access its particular features.​
Schedules, Usage (summary and graphs), Chemistry (IntelliChlor and IntelliChem control), Status (current status, warnings and alerts) and Settings (setup and configuration option controls) are also provided on the home screen.​
The screen can be pass code-protected to prevent unauthorized access to the IntelliCenter Control System. Additional information and instructions can be found beginning on PP 5 of the IntelliCenter User’s Guide.​
IntelliCenter Valve Expansion Module (P/N 522038Z): The purpose of the optional Valve Expansion Module is to allow for more than four (4) valve actuators (PS models) or 2020-02-10_16-40-24.jpgmore than two (2) valve actuators (P models), to be controlled by the IntelliCenter. It allows for a total of eight or ten valve actuators to be connected to the system respectively.​
You will only require this module if you plan on utilizing more than four (4) valve actuators for the “PS” models or two (2) valve actuators for the “P” models. See also: IntelliCenter Control System Personality and Expansion Card Installation Guide.​
IntelliCenter Web-Client: The IntelliCenter Control System Web-Client provides for the user or “client” side of the connection between a user’s computer and the Pentair 2020-02-18_1-02-23.jpgservers (which the IntelliCenter is connected to) and which serves as the method in which complete programming and control of your pool and spa occurs from anywhere via the Internet, while normally utilizing a PC, MAC or tablet to access your IntelliCenter remotely.​
The Web-Client features the HOME, POOL(s), FEATURES, LIGHTS, CHEMISTRY, PUMPS and HISTORY pages.​
It also provides features that allow for SETTINGS (programming), the remote management of systems by pool professionals, the ability to enable spa-side remotes and an on-line manual.​
It also features the typical “ABOUT” screen that indicates panel configuration information, web-client version and the IntelliCenter Control System firmware version.​
The Web-Client software / versions (not to be confused with firmware updates) are updated remotely via the Pentair IntelliCenter servers.​
NOTE: The IntelliCenter Web-Client is the method of programming the IntelliCenters’ functionality that most users find the most convenient.​
NOTE: For those who wish to "test drive" the look and feel of the IntelliCenter Web-Client, you can do so at the IntelliCenter Pool & Spa and Pool Only Demo portals.​
EDIT: Since the original posting of this IntelliCenter Quick Reference / Information Guide thread, there have been several significant developments and advancements relating to alternative IntelliCenter Controllers / Interfaces. Some of which may introduce several advantages over the Pentair proprietary option of control and interfacing with the IntelliCenter OCP for some IntelliCenter users. One such controller / interface option is the nodejs-poolController and associated nodejs-poolController-dashPanel. Line-Voltage: For purposes of this guide, reference to line-voltage is defined as single-phase 120 Vac or split-phase 240 Vac.​
Load Center: The load center is the metal enclosure that houses the power (FLTR/AUX) power relays, 110/240 Vac system transformer with secondary side-circuit protection 2020-02-12_14-51-20.jpgand IntelliChlor transformer (if installed), necessary circuit breakers and also provides space for all line-voltage and low-voltage wiring needs.​
The “footprint” of the Load Center is 26” H x 17” W x 5-1/4” D,​
The Load Center is divided up into three major areas. The upper low-voltage compartment, the low voltage raceway (left side) and the high-voltage compartment (lower right).​
The Load Center is installed at the pool equipment pad and distributes power for controlling IntelliCenter Control Systems and associated pool/spa electrical equipment.​
The ac power to the load center is typically provided from the main circuit breaker panel located at the house. The Load Center is installed before Personality Kit installation.​
Also referred to as the “IntelliCenter sub-panel”, the Load Center includes a built-in sub panel (150 AMPS) capable of holding up to ten 1” breakers. Multiple knockouts for different sizes of conduit are supplied in the bottom as well as a GFCI convenience receptacle side knockout.​
Knockouts in the left-hand side and left-hand bottom (adjacent to the low-voltage raceway) are provided for low-voltage conduit and individual wiring connections.​
A Control System Transformer, Ground Bus Bar and Neutral Bus Bar are also provided within the high-voltage compartment. Two outer bonding lugs are provided for bonding to the pool bonding system.​
The high-voltage compartment is protected by a high-voltage cover panel to ensure safety to the user as well as installed electrical components when the Load Center door is opened. The door spring latch can accept an optional pad lock for security and can be easily removed for ease of Load Center and associated components installation.​
The Load Center can be purchased bundled with the optional IntelliChlor transformer if an IntelliChlor SCG is planned for installation.​

Low-Voltage: For purposes of this guide, low voltage is defined as any ac voltage that is less than 30 Vac or any dc voltage that is utilized by the IntelliCenter Control System and associated pool equipment.​
Low Voltage Compartment: Top compartment of the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center that contains all low-voltage wiring and components. It is adjoined by the Low Voltage Raceway 2020-02-12_14-47-49.jpgon the left-hand side of the Load/Power Center.​
Low Voltage Raceway: The vertical space on the left side of the IntelliCenter Power or Load Center dedicated for any low-voltage cabling that transits the Power or Load Center 2020-02-18_1-20-52.jpgsuch as pump control cables, air, water and solar temperature sensor wiring, valve actuator cabling, indoor controller RS-485 cables, , spa-side remote and wireless antenna cabling, etc.​

Macro: A term used to describe a “macro-instruction”. The IntelliCenter “Circuit Groups” are essentially macros and are used to record and automate several of those single instructions (Aux and Feature Circuits) into one instruction (Circuit Group). See “Circuit Groups” above.​
Manual OP Priority: ON: This is a feature that allows for a circuit to be manually switched OFF and switched ON within a scheduled program. The circuit will continue to run for a maximum of 12 hours or whatever that circuit Egg Timer is set to, after which the scheduled program will resume. This feature will turn off any scheduled program to allow for manual pump override. The Default setting is Off.​
Pool Cover Circuit Board (A/D) (P/N 522039): An optional circuit card that supports a maximum of two pool and/or spa covers. This optional circuit card does not allow for the actual operation (opening/closing) of the pool cover(s) for safety reasons (see WARNING below).​
The purpose of the Pool Cover Board informs the user that the cover(s) are either in an open or closed state and allows the user to select which circuits to switch Off and On when the pool or spa cover is either open or closed via the Pool Cover 1/Pool Cover 2 settings menu as applicable. Controls selectable IntelliChlor output when the cover(s) are closed.​
WARNING: The IntelliCenter power relays (Filter/Auxiliary Circuits) should NEVER be utilized for controlling the opening and closing of pool covers, otherwise swimmers may become entrapped under the cover.​
Power Center: Same as Load Center with the exception of the lack of the circuit breaker base within the High-Voltage Compartment (no circuit breakers are utilized and requires a separate circuit breaker panel). The Power Center can be purchased bundled with the IntelliChlor transformer or not.​
Power Relay (P/N 520106) Filter Pump (FLTR) / Auxiliary (Aux) Line-Voltage (power) Relay:​
2020-02-18_1-26-26.jpgThe purpose of the IntelliCenter power relays are to control the On/Off features of line-voltage pool equipment such as pumps (see NOTE below), lights, low-voltage lighting transformers, blowers, etc. The relays are mounted on the upper power relay mounting platform at the top of the high-voltage compartment within the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center.​
According to some references, the Pentair Power Relays support a maximum of 20 amps. But the relay itself indicates a maximum of 25 amps. It may be possible that Pentair de-rated the amperage of the power relay. I cannot say with any confidence.​
Five (5) power relays are included with the Load Center. Additional relays are included with the i8P / i8PS (3 additional) or i10P / i10PS (5 additional) Personality Kits. Further information on kits can be found in Section 8. of this guide.​
These relays are identified and controlled within the various IntelliCenter user interfaces as Filter Pump (FLTR) and Auxiliary (AUX) Circuits.​
The relays feature a low voltage control wire that plugs into the associated 2-pin connectors identified as Filter Pump (FLTR) and 2020-02-06_18-41-35.jpgauxiliary (AUX1, 2 etc.) circuit connectors on the motherboard as illustrated or certain daughter cards (as applicable).​
There are four (4) terminal compression screws on the forward bottom of the relay, each of which allows two leads to be connected.​
The 1st and the 3rd (left-to-right) compression screws (LINE SIDE) are designated to be wired to the associated circuit breaker and consequently remain continuously energized (HOT), unless the applicable circuit breaker is “flipped” off manually or tripped for some reason.​
The 2nd and the 4th compression terminal screws (LOAD SIDE) are designated to be wired to the line-voltage item itself (pumps (see NOTE below), lights, blower, etc.) The LOAD SIDE terminals are only energized when the circuit has been turned on through the automation system either manually or through a scheduled event.​
The power relay is designed to control either 240 Vac or 110 Vac equipment and devices.​
If the relay is used to control a 240 Vac device - The 1st and 3rd compression terminal screws (LINE SIDE) are used to connect each leg of the 240 Vac circuit to the associated circuit breaker.​
The 2nd and 4th compression terminal screws (LOAD SIDE) are used to connect each leg of the 240Vac circuit to the applicable line-voltage device (pump (see NOTE below), blower, etc.)​
If the relay is used to control a 120 Vac device - Then the 1st compression terminal screw is used to connect the 120 Vac circuit (“black” power leg) to the applicable single-pole breaker.​
The 2nd compression terminal screw is used to connect the 120 Vac circuit (“black” power leg) to the applicable line-voltage device (light, low voltage lighting transformer, etc.). The “white” neutral leg is connected to the neutral bus bar or in the case of GFCI circuit breakers, to the terminal screw located on the breaker for that purpose and the white pigtail from the breaker connects to the neutral bus bar.​
NOTE: When connecting any Pentair IntelliFlo pump (VS, VF, VSF), the power connections to the IntelliFlo pump DO NOT adhere to the above example.​

Pentair IntelliFlo pump power leads MUST BE connected to continuous power in order to function properly and as designed.​
One method is to connect the IntelliFlo power leads to the LINE SIDE (1st and 3rd compression terminal screws) of the power relay.​
The other method would be to simply connect the IntelliFlo power leads directly to the applicable circuit breaker.​
Both connectivity options allow the IntelliFlo pump electronic circuits to receive power continuously, unless of course the circuit breaker is flipped off manually or tripped for some reason.​
The IntelliFlo pump motor is turned On/Off through the automation system circuitry, via the IntelliFlo RS-485 Control Cable which is connected between the pump and the RS-485 connectors on the IntelliCenter motherboard (J4 or J5).​
Connecting an IntelliFlo Filter Pump to the LOAD SIDE terminals of the Filter Pump Relay is NOT correct and seems to be a common mistake made by installers who are not familiar with the IntelliFlo line of pumps and/or Pentair Automation Systems.​
Relay Circuits: The relay circuits are utilized by the IntelliCenter Control System to control the On/Off functions of the Filter Pump (FLTR) and Auxiliary (AUX) power relays.​
RS-485 “Peer-to-Peer” communications: This term refers to a serial communication standard utilizing a common multi-protocol serial bus that the IntelliCenter control system uses to communicate to various other Pentair devices through a separate “control cable” which is connected between the device, and the two “COM PORTS (J4 or J5)” on the IntelliCenter motherboard, as well as an optional Pentair Serial COM Port Expansion Board (P/N 520818) if installed.​
Examples of devices that the IntelliCenter communicates with via this common bus are the Pentair IntelliFlo line of pool pumps, certain non-standard type higher end Pentair pool/spa heater models (UltraTemp and UltraTemp ETI Hybrid heater), the IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board, the IntelliChem Controller and the optional remote controllers.​
The Pentair IntelliFlo VS, VF and VSF pool pumps, as well as the UltraTemp and UltraTemp ETI heaters use a 2-wire (yellow and green) control cable in order to connect to the RS-485 bus.​
The IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board, IntelliChem Controller, Spa-Side Remotes, Indoor Control Panel and the Wireless Transceiver, use a 4-wire (red, yellow, green, black) control cable to connect to the RS-485 bus.​
NOTE: Pentair was pitching a feature even before the IntelliCenter hit the market (4th quarter of 2018), that would allow the Intellicenter to communicate with Pentair’s newest valve actuator (IntelliValve) via this common bus. This would allow for IntelliValve multi-positional operation instead of the current limitation of just two positions.​
The IntelliValve control cables contain both yellow and green leads that connect to the bus via the optional Pentair Serial COM Port Expansion Board (J8-J13) for this very purpose.​
As of this writing, this feature has yet to be released via a firmware update by Pentair and consequently has caused some consternation among some IntelliCenter users that were expecting this feature to be released by now.​
Serial COM Port Expansion Board (Port Multiplexer) (P/N 520818): The optional Pentair Serial COM Port Expansion Board or otherwise known as a "Port Multiplexer", allows for additional RS-485 connections. A maximum of two Serial COM Port 2020-02-09_19-53-39.jpgexpansion boards may be mounted on the back wall of the IntelliCenter in the low voltage compartment behind the fold-down Outdoor Control Panel.​
Each of these multiplexers are populated with the following connectors:​
- Three (3) four position screw terminal blocks (COM Ports) J1-J3
- Four (4) two position screw terminal blocks (COM Ports) J4-J7
- Six (6) IntelliValve two pin connectors (these connectors are provided for connection to the yellow and green wires provided within the IntelliValve valve actuator control cable, J8-J13).​

Temperature Sensor(s): 10k Ohms “thermistor” sensors used with the IntelliCenter Control System. These sensors essentially provide the syst2020-02-16_19-15-54.jpgem with electrical signals that are then converted into standard temperature readings for control of pool/spa temperatures and indications on the various user interfaces. Temperature sensors are used for ambient air temperature, water temperature and solar temperature (if applicable).​
Two temperature sensors are provided with most of the IntelliCenter Personality Kits (water and air). A third sensor is provided with the i10D Personality Kit. Typically the water sensor is provided with a 25’ cable and the air sensor features a 10’ cable.​
The air, water and solar temperature sensor leads are connected at the AIR/SOLAR/WATER sensor screw terminals (J15) on the motherboard. The leads have no polarity.​
Sensors should be protected from direct sunlight as much as possible in order to enhance the accuracy of the temperature reading.​
High Power Wireless Link Kit (Primary Client Bridge) (P/N 523445): The Primary Client Bridge provides an optional wireless (Wi-Fi) interface between the IntelliCenter System motherboard and the user’s wireless router or access point when “hard-wiring” via a Cat-5e/Cat-6 ethernet cable is not preferred or practical. In addition, utilizing Wi-Fi connectivity with the IntelliCenter may have an added benefit of possibly preventing surges/spikes through the users’ local area network (LAN) from damaging the IntelliCenter.​
The Wireless Client Bridge utilizes an 802.11 LAN protocol and incorporates an adjustable transmit power feature for longer distances. Components include Wi-Fi antenna, power module and power cable. The power cable from the power module plugs into the 2-pin 24V Wi-Fi Bridge connection provided in the upper left-hand corner of the i5P Motherboard.​

6. Related Pool Equipment/Accessories Definitions and Descriptions -
IntelliChem: The IntelliChem Water Chemistry Controller is a pH and ORP sensing device that dispenses correct amounts of chlorine or bromine, muriatic acid or CO2 gas. 2020-02-09_19-47-29.jpgThe IntelliChem controller provides continual analysis of your swimming pool water sanitation and pH levels, providing real-time status information to dispense the proper amount of muriatic acid (pH reducer) and chlorine or bromine for the correct sanitization and pH balance.​
The IntelliChem controller operates with or without a salt chlorine generator to provide a self-replenishing supply of chlorine generated from salt. The IntelliChem controller is supported by and integrates with the IntelliCenter Control System. For additional information refer to: IntelliChem Water Chemistry Controller Installation and User’s Guide

NOTE: Personally I choose not to opt for the installation and use of the IntelliChem due to quite a bit of advice received on TFP concerning issues with ORP sensing reliability. However, some users have reported success with the chemistry controller. There are quite a few threads on TFP that examine the pros and cons of the IntelliChem with many user opinions provided.​
At this time, I personally feel that the combination of the IntelliChlor/IntellipH installation works much better for me as a personal choice. This choice allows me automatic chlorine generation in combination with automatic acid dosing, which simply just requires regular pool water chemistry testing and then making minor adjustments to the SCG through the IntelliCenter and then IntellipH dosing level adjustments via the IntellipH controller during the swim season.​
IntelliChlor Salt Chlorine Generator (SCG): A Pentair Salt Chlorine Generator device that uses a process known as electrolysis to produce sodium hypochlorite (liquid 2020-02-09_19-45-41.jpgchlorine) from a low concentration of salt added to the pool water. The amount of chlorine produced by the SCG can be adjusted through the IntelliCenter Control System, as determined by regular pool water testing and then adjusted accordingly.​
NOTE: There is an abundance of high quality information and guidance on TFP regarding the IntellliChlor and some outstanding Salt Chlorine Generator general information at TFP Pool School.​
IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board: The IntellliChlor Controller Circuit Board is provided for and installed in either an IntelliCenter Load Center or Power Center when bundled with the IntelliChlor SCG option or it can be purchased separately.​
2020-02-11_11-43-43.jpgThe IntelliChlor controller circuit board is mounted on the right-hand back wall of the IntelliCenter Load/Power Center in the low voltage compartment (if installed). In combination with the IntelliChlor transformer located in the IntelliCenter high-voltage compartment, they combine to provide the same functionality as the separate IntelliChlor SCG Power Center Enclosure.​
The IntelliChlor controller circuit board is connected via two wires (one through the SCG low voltage circuit breaker) to the IntelliChlor transformer (located in the IntelliCenter line-voltage compartment) by which it receives low voltage ac power through the connectors’ labeled J8 and J9. The controller board is also connected to the IntelliCenter RS-485 bus on the motherboard via a 4-conductor control cable (J4 or J5). There are three RS-485 4-conductor terminals located on the IntelliChlor circuit board (J2, J3 and J4).​
NOTE: Any of the RS-485 4-pin conductor terminals (J2, J3 and J4), can not only be connected to the IntelliCenter Mother Card but they can also be used as additional RS-485 connections for any piece of equipment that may require such connection.
The IntelliChlor cell is connected to the controller circuit board via a 4-conductor control cable as illustrated and supplies low voltage dc electrical current which the cell requires in order to produce chlorine.​
IntelliChlor Transformer: The IntelliChlor transformer (if installed) is mounted in the high voltage compartment, just below the system transformer. In combination with 2020-02-18_1-50-24.jpgthe IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board, located in the IntelliCenter low voltage compartment, they provide the same functionality as the separate IntelliChlor SCG Power Center Enclosure.​
The purpose of the IntelliCenter transformer is simply to convert line-voltage ac power to an ac voltage useable by the IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board. The transformer typically receives line-voltage ac power via the LOAD side terminals of the filter pump circuit relay, converts that power to a usable voltage and then delivers it to the IntelliChlor Controller Circuit Board located in the IntelliCenter low voltage compartment via the two red wires on the right-hand side of the relay.​
The IntelliChlor Transformer can utilize either 240 Vac or 120 Vac. It is pre-wired at the factory for 240 Vac when bundled, which is preferred for most typical installations.​
Note: The IntelliChlor transformer should always be connected to the LOAD side compression terminal screw(s) of the Filter Pump Relay as illustrated on pp36 of the IntelliCenter Control System Installation Guide. Doing so will insure that the IntelliChlor Cell can only be energized when the filter pump circuit is also energized, causing water to flow through the IntelliChlor cell and thus preventing possible damage to the cell.​
IntellipH: The IntellipH system adds acid to the pool every hour that the filter pump is operating. The dispense amount is based on the user’s settings through the IntellipH 2020-02-18_1-53-17.jpgcontrol panel. The amount of acid added each hour can be quickly changed by pressing either the MORE or LESS buttons with a range of 1% - 100% in 1% increments on the IntellipH control panel. If 0% is selected, no acid will be dispensed.​
If an IntellipH and IntelliChlor Salt Chlorine Generator cell are used in combination with the IntelliCenter, then the IntelliChlor Cell should be connected via the IntellipH controller and the IntellipH controller is connected to the IntelliCenter (IntelliChlor connection). In other words, the IntelliChlor cell is then connected “in-series” with the IntellipH controller.​
There is an abundance of high quality information and guidance on TFP containing detailed IntellipH installation, operation and care.​
NOTE: Acid dispensing amounts from the IntellipH are NOT currently supported by the IntelliCenter Control System at this time but in my experience this is not a big deal. I would however like to be able to control manual acid dosing in the winter from my desktop or my iPhone IntelliCenter app but again, no big deal. Maybe someday. :(
IntelliValve (P/N 521485): The IntelliValve Valve Actuator is an electronically controlled, motorized valve actuator which rotates the diverter valve located within a Jandy or similar type pool valve, to a set position for the desired proportion of water flow necessary for various applications (pool/spa intake and return, flow to water features, opening of heater 2020-02-09_19-42-03.jpgbypass valve, etc). From the control pad, the IntelliValve valve actuator provides easy setup and control of your diverter valve for pool and spa combinations, water features, heater bypass, etc.​
Two (2) IntelliValves are included with ALL IntelliCenter "PS" model bundled systems or the Personality Kits. Additional relays can be purchased separetely. Further information on which kits include the IntelliValve can be found in the IntelliCenter Bundled and Component Parts List.​
Thirteen (13) bright LEDs provide a clear visual indication of the valve position from fully open to fully closed (180 degrees) and anywhere in between in 3.75 degree increments. Simply use the left/right and Save buttons to set the exact water flow.​
The IntelliValve Valve Actuator supports Jandy, Pentair, Compool or Ortega diverter valves. The IntelliValve is suitable for 1.5”, 2”, 2.5” and 3” valve sizes. Allows for adjustable 3.75 degree increments within the maximum 180 degree range.​
Compatible and supported by the IntelliCenter Control System but not to its full capability at this time unfortunately. :(

Surge Protective Device (SPD): A Surge Protective Device (SPD) is an electrical protective device for limiting transient voltages by diverting or limiting surge current and is 2020-02-10_16-35-34.jpgcapable of repeating these functions as specified. A majority of surges originate with motor-based devices as well.​
The IntelliCenter Control System can usually be protected from these transients or spikes by incorporating an SPD at the IntelliCenter Load Center. Most suitable SPD’s that are most effective at minimizing the effect of these surges are typically connected to a dedicated double-pole circuit breaker mounted closest to the SPD.​

7. Optional Remote Controllers and Accessories: The following optional remote controllers are NOT typically required items for most IntelliCenter installations. Especially given that all of the functionality provided by these remote controllers are provided via a user’s iOS or android mobile device.

The only reasons that I can think of that a user may opt for one of these remote control devices is: (1), the user chooses not to connect their IntelliCenter to their local network (LAN) or (2), they are not comfortable having their expensive iOS or Android device so close to their Pool or Spa.

Besides the cost factor, another disadvantage for opting for some of these devices is that they make accessibility to the IntelliCenter controls and functionality extremely easy. Especially for “little hands” if a user has small children (although “lock-out” is possible). Not a good scenario in my opinion.

I have listed these items just as a courtesy and hope this answers some of the type of questions that are asked from time-to-time concerning these remotes.

8. IntelliCenter Control System Components and Personality Kit Descriptions –

The following information attempts to list and explain the different types of IntelliCenter Control Systems and associated components available for either pool, spa, pool/spa combinations (sharing a common filtration system) or Pool/Spa combinations with separate filtration systems.

The minimum required components of an IntelliCenter Control System is a Load Center or Power Center (see definitions above), and a Personality Kit (explained below). If a user plans on hard-wiring the IntelliCenter motherboard to their router, then no other communications interface would be required to command the IntelliCenter from a PC/laptop and/or mobile device (see Wi-Fi Link Kit (Primary Client Bridge) (P/N 522475Z) above.

If a user desires to connect to their router via a Wi-Fi connection or any other type of interface (Indoor Control Panel (wired), Indoor Control Panel (wireless), SpaCommand Controller or QuickTouch Wireless Controller) then those options are available as well, in order to program (with some of these controllers) and control the IntelliCenter remotely (see above).

The majority of IntelliCenter users typically connect remotely to the IntelliCenter Control System via a Wi-Fi Link Kit (primary client bridge). This option is available in the various “bundled” system kits - IntelliCenter Bundled and Component Parts List

Single Body of Water – The following Personality Kits (models) are specifically designed for a single body of water (pool only or spa only) with one filtration system.

  • i5P (P/N 521909) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices). The five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable.
The motherboard includes: filter pump relay circuit plus 4 additional aux relay circuits, Valve A & B connections, heater control - J2 (gas) and electronic (EHTR), solar relay output, 2-speed pump relay output, water, air and solar sensor connections (J15), two COM ports (J4/J5), Ethernet port, iS4 remote port (J8) and 24V Wi-Fi bridge power connection.​

  • i8P (P/N 521910) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices) Three (3) additional auxiliary circuits are provided on the daughter card. Five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable and three more are provided with the Personality Kit.
The motherboard is the same as the i5P. The expansion daughter card which “slide connects” to the motherboard includes three additional auxiliary circuits and one additional iS4 remote connection (J2).​

  • i10P (P/N 521911) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices) Five (5) additional auxiliary circuits are provided on the daughter card. Five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable and five more are provided with the Personality Kit.
The motherboard is the same as the i5P. The expansion daughter card which “slide connects” to the motherboard includes five additional auxiliary circuits and one additional iS4 remote connection (J2).​


Two Bodies of Water (sharing one common filtration system) – The following Personality Kits (models) are specifically designed for two bodies of water (pool AND spa) sharing one common filtration system. The “PS” models allow for the creation of a feature circuit (spa spillway function) to control water flow separation between the pool and spa without the need for additional valve circuits.

  • i5PS (P/N 521912) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices). The five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable.
The motherboard includes: filter pump relay circuit plus 4 additional aux relay circuits, Valve A & B connections, heater control - J2 (gas) and electronic (EHTR), solar relay output, 2-speed pump relay output, water, air and solar sensor connections (J15), two COM ports (J4/J5), Ethernet port, iS4 remote port (J8) and 24V Wi-Fi bridge power connection. The "PS" daughter card which “slide connects” to the motherboard includes a SPA circuit and INTAKE/RETURN, Two valve circuits, and one additional iS4 remote connection (J2).​

  • i8PS (P/N 521913) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices). The five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable. Three (3) additional auxiliary circuits are provided on the daughter card. Five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable and three more are provided with the Personality Kit.

  • i10D (P/N 521915) – Five (5) circuits are provided on the motherboard (one for filter pump operation and four additional auxiliary circuits for other 110/220 Vac devices). The five relays are included in the Load Center or Power Center as applicable.
The motherboard includes: filter pump relay circuit plus 4 additional aux relay circuits, Valve A & B connections, heater control - J2 (gas) and electronic (EHTR), solar relay output, 2-speed pump relay output, water, air and solar sensor connections (J15), two COM ports (J4/J5), Ethernet port, iS4 remote port (J8) and 24V Wi-Fi bridge connection.​
The expansion daughter card which “slide connects” to the motherboard includes five additional auxiliary circuits. A second (additional) filter pump circuit, heater control - J2 (gas) and electronic (EHTR), solar relay output, 2-speed pump relay output, water and solar sensor connections (J15), and one additional iS4 Remote connection (J2).​

  • IntelliCenter Control System Expansion Kits – For very large pool or pool/spa combinations that require more than ten (10) FLTR/Aux circuits, IntelliCenter expansion kits are available. More than ten circuits are typically required when a pool build incorporates combinations of multiple pool and spa lights and other lighted items such as laminars, deck jets, fire bowls, lighted bubblers, fountains etc. These expansion kits require additional load or power centers.
Models i5X (P/N 521033) and i10X (P/N 521034), offer five or ten additional Auxiliary Circuits. Each IntelliCenter Control System Expansion Kit requires a Load Center (P/N 521213) or Power Center (P/N 521214). Up to three Expansion Kits and Load or Power Centers may be added to a system, for control of up to 38 Auxiliary Circuits (40 auxiliary circuits’ i10x).​


9. EasyTouch / IntelliTouch Upgrade to IntelliCenter Information –
Although probably not necessary or cost-effective, but for those few that may entertain the idea of upgrading their present EasyTouch or IntelliTouch systems to the IntelliCenter, Pentair does offer various upgrade kits depending on the model of EasyTouch or IntelliTouch and on the users’ “body-of-water” configuration (Pool or Spa, Pool/Spa combo or Pool and Spa (dual filtration systems).

  • EasyTouch / IntelliTouch Control System Upgrade to Intellicenter for legacy systems 2003-2012.
One body of water (Pool or Spa), i10P (P/N 522045)​
Two bodies of water Pool/Spa Combination, i10PS (P/N 522046)​

I think the IC can technically function without a personality kit. Based on my findings from digging around in the API the system can support a total of 26 valve actuators. In order for this to be possible the four expansion slots would all have to be filled with valve expansion modules adding 24 (4x6) actuator control plugs to the two on board the motherboard for a total of 26. Which would leave no room of a personality card.

This would of course limit the system to a max of four relays and a single body of water but for someone who is mainly interested in valve control then this may be the desired setup ?

Based on your discovery in the API, then yes, I would have to agree. This find reveals then, that the system could support more than just the 10 valve actuators max, that Pentair advertises, just by adding more than the one valve expansion module. It is good to know that one could have a max of 10 power circuits and then they could have more than just the six additional valve actuator circuits that a single valve expansion module offers.

Recalling your future setup, I think I recall that you showed quite a bit of valves in that complex setup that you are planning. So this find may be useful in a large non-typical installation such as yours.

So for instance, one could have the motherboard, an i10PS daughter card, two valve expansion boards and still have room on the back of the control panel for an additional optional card such as the Pool Cover card. This example would provide for 10 power circuits, 16 valve actuator circuits and two pool/spa covers. Certainly not a scenario needed for most of us, but still good to know for the few large non-typical installations out there.

BTW, now that I've got this latest project in the rear view, its time now to start digging into those files that cmc0619, and you have been fooling around with. I'm really curious about that binary called "485". Still wondering if that may be the "door" that opens up the possibility of communicating with the valve actuators. I'm not near as smart with these things that you and C. are, so certainly may need some assistance.

This post is amazing and was exactly what I needed. So, first off, thank you for all this hard work and research.

I just went full-boat and upgraded from an old school intermatic timer and single speed pump to the intellicenter, VSF, SWG, ph dosing and a heat pump. This post helped me organize my install so much.

I installed over the weekend and turned it on Monday. I've figured out how to get it all running, and am working on schedules and groups. My only hiccup is despite all my efforts, the Intellicenter is failing to control the UltraTemp heat pump. It sees it, and the heartbeat shows it's connected on the pump side, but it won't kick on. The heat pump works manually just fine, just not through the RS-485 connection from the controller. Looks like this is not new, and EasyTouch and IntelliTouch had the same issues. I've changed the address to 2 on the intellicenter and the heater, in case there is conflict with the Pump on address 1. Still no love. Wondering if I should just use Relay mode instead. Thoughts?

The Intellichlor (linked through the Intelliph) also keeps sending alerts that it's lost connection, then immediately says it's back.

All that said, only 2 days in, and happy overall so far.

Post pics of your RS-485 wiring on both sides.

If you were planning to use the IntelliCenter to switch from HEAT to COOL mode note the following:

When in chiller mode Pentair forgot to link the temperature differential up to the chiller portion. So if you have a chiller set point of 87 degrees, and your temperature bounces back and forth between 88 and 87 degrees - your fan will cycle on/off, on/off, on/off until the temperature is a constant 87 degrees. That will eventually burn the fan motor up.

If you were intending to only use it for heat then the Relay mode will work just as well as the RS-485 mode and be simplier.
 
Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I just got off the phone with Joe at Pentair and he was a wealth of information on wiring UltraTemp heat pumps to these Intellicenters.

Turns out the problem wasn't the wiring with the RS-485, but the fact that there was no solar temperature sensor installed. He said that he's not sure why they don't include one while they do include the air and water temp sensors with the controller, nor why they don't tell you it's required to make the heat pumps run (if going the RS-485 comm route). I stole the air temp sensor (since I'm not at risk of freezing again anytime here in Austin) and screwed it into the Solar sensor location. Immediately after restarting, the heat pump fired right up. And it increased the Pump speed. Perfect.

For giggles I tried to run a jumper from solar to air inputs to see if we could use the same sensor and save on purchasing another one, but alas that didn't work. Because it measures resistance, it read that the temp was half what it really is. Ordered another temp sensor and should be good to go when it arrives.

On another note, I asked why I couldn't schedule run times for the Intellichlor; it runs non-stop whenever the pool is "on". Since I want to run the heat pump, for extended times to get the temp up, but not chlorinate the whole time he said that the only way he knows how to do it is to run the IntelliPH/IntelliChlor through an Aux relay. Not sure if that's the case, but I'll keep playing around with it.

In the meantime @MyAZPool It might be a good idea to mention the need for all three temp sensors to make UltraTemp heat pumps work with the automation through RS-485 communication.
