Even better! I will look around now. THANKS!

Repairing Cracked PVC Pipe with a Union - YouTube

Got it! It is longer that I would like BUT it shows how they work. You should be able to watch it and go look at your unions. That way you are sure to twist the correct way to get them loose.

Kim

Thank you! Looking at it this video this morning.
Here are new counts:
FC: 42x.5 = 21
CC = 1x.5 = 1
Not adding anything.

I still cannot get those unions off for the life of me. I will have to wait to see if my husband can do it.
Meanwhile, still brown stuff - I brushed it to the deep end near the filter.
Water counts:
FC = 40x.5 = 20
CC = .5
Not adding anything.
I looked at the skimmer sock, the brown stuff is on it again - I touched it - it is actually clumpy and you can roll it in a ball in your fingers.

Question - if you let the test kit sit out with the water in it that you just tested, it ends up turning slight pink again - is that "normal?" (For CC)
Thanks
Jen
PS: water is pretty clear

It is normal for the water to turn pink after it sits.

New Counts:
43x.5 = 21.5
CC= 0

So I haven't had to add any bleach today yet - that's good, right?
Jen

You must have had a mis count as you cannot gain FC. Unless you have a SWG or added

clumpy and roll it into a ball in your fingers?

You can't roll sand into a ball. Dead algae is more of a powder for me and is gray not brown.

Does it smell?

I have NO idea what it is!

I can't wait to see what your filter looks like inside. I wonder if there will be a clue in there.

Kim

I must have messed up the counts. Sorry about that!
New counts:
FC = 31x.5 = 15.5
CC = 0
Adding 77 oz of bleach
Doesn't smell that I can tell.
Jason, my husband is going to buy a strap wrench b/c we cannot open the unions. I'm also out of bleach - I have to go buy more.

Ok, finally got it open and there is a black thing in the way that will not budge. See photo. What I can tell is that the water inside looks very clear and I can see to the bottom of the filter. I don't see anything that looks like sand in the filter - I don't see anything. Is that black thing supposed to come out? It's attached to this pipe in the middle.

What does this mean?

The sand would be around the tube not inside the tube.

Is there any label anywhere on the filter with name, brand, model, etc????

Put the top back on and keep up your SLAM. At least now you know how to get it off. I am unsure of your next step as it does not look like mine. I am hoping with the above info I will be able to find out what to do next.

Ok, it is back together and running. I found the info on the filter and pump. Please see attached photos of the paperwork on my filter and pump. LMK what you think. Thank you!

Says 300 lbs of sand is needed - you would think I would have seen some sand in the filter if there was 300 lbs of it...? Unless it is a color I can't see....? So confused.

New counts:
42x.5 = 21 FC
1x.5 = .5 CC
Not adding anything

Well that is very interesting!!!! Thank you! I think that maybe it is sand coming in the pool and the green has to do with the chemicals being off and the sand not doing its job. I think I would have to add sand. I don't want to break that black part that is stuck on the pipe - or the pipe. Looks like they haven't opened up this filter in a long time - I bet if there is sand, it needs to be replaced. Since the calcium hardness was 0 from the beginning, I did read that can turn water a tint of green. Just assumptions. I will try again to get that black part off but I am not going to force it too hard. I can't get to it until later this afternoon. Once I do, I will see if there is sand and I will replace it - is sand expensive? I hope not. Then again - what's eating the chlorine then....hummmmm....maybe just the sun?

Sand it not that expensive. You will want to get the 20# silica sand. It averages $6-8 a 50 pound bag depending on where you buy it. You have to make sure once you put new sand in the filter that you backwash it really well and rinse it really well too before you turn the pump on to filter.

Here is what I am seeing:
Leslie's 14344 Natural Zeolite Sand
$25 for 25 lbs and it is equivalent to 50 lbs
Walmart has pool sand - Walmart.com
50 lb for $25 (but walmarts around here are notorious for not having what you need at the store)

Don't get Zeo sand. Get the 20# silica sand you can get it at Home Depot or Lowes also. My Walmart does not carry sand.

Looks like Lowes does not have it, but Home Depot does.

Just make sure it is pool sand and not construction sand.
