Mine does the same thing. Not a lot of sand but enough for me to know. Thought of replacing my laterals but my valve is leaking to the drain which I've installed a ball valve but next year will be replacing the sand filter

When is the last time you changed your sand? Have you done a yearly deep clean on your sand filter? Possible leaks at the spider valve?

For you I'd just bring it to shock level since you have no one to trust. And in all honestly, depending if you have a sock(in the skimmer) I'd leave it running 24/7
