Chlorine lock why!!!

How does the ammonia get in there when the water was crystal clear and all chemical levels were good? Is it not possible that the massive amount of pollen caused it? Just asking. The pollen after rain does leach into the pool from the solar cover!
There is a bacteria that eats CYA and converts it to ammonia. The bacteria is typically in dirt and blown in...

You had zero CYA when you opened. When you added 3 gallons of chlorine it went away immediately. These are the hallmarks of ammonia. Re-read the article..just keep adding 10ppm chlorine until it holds above 5ppm. When it holds, ammonia gone.

See post #2...you are on the right track!!!

Yes I had 0 CYA but brought it up to 40PPM and it held there all week before I put the solar cover on. I checked it 3 times during the week. Last check was the day I put the solar cover on. Also wondering about the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. Was pretty bad here a few times in the last 5 days!

Can't see your logs...before you dumped the chlorine in today, did you check CYA again? Did you get to your target? You might want to confirm that the CYA you added is in the pool...

I will check in the AM when the sun comes up to see if the PH and TA dropped any further! Took 6 gallons to get to 10PPM. Just checked it a few minutes ago.
My $$ says Ammonia and your CYA is gone. 6 gallons should raise FC by 30 in your pool, even if you were in slam, no way it would consume 20ppm in an hour or so...

Check CYA in the morning too...

The CYA went from 40PPM down to 10PPM. This was after the solar cover was on for 5 days. I added chlorine then tested an hour later only to find a 0 reading. That's when I tested for CYA and found 10PPM 5 days later. Noticed the water was a little cloudy but no algae green or yellow. Hit my target at 6 gallons of 12.5%. I use Austin's pool tech shock 12.5%. I use the pool calculator and this chlorine is spot on with the pool calculator. Been using it for over 10 years.

I agree. This happened once before. It took 8 gallons just to get a reading then another 8 gallons to complete the slam. It almost smells like ammonia in my back yard near the pool. I joke to friends that I think dear come in my yard at night drink beer and pee in my pool.

Vinny, Post #2 my friend. Prepare yourself with an arsenal of liquid chlorine and a stopwatch, and you can break through this wall. But you have to have the chlorine and time. Previously you had family commitments, so if you aren't quit ready yet, we understand. But when you are ready to tackle the pool, you have to be all in on this one. Suspected ammonia is no joke. You need chlorine and lots of it. Grab a cold one and be prepared to test FC & add chlorine every 10 minutes for a few cycles before it holds.

Already working on it my friend. 4 cases of chlorine on hand. Just went out and checked again. I'm at 11 PPM. I have the next 3 days off so I should be able to get a good start on it by Sunday night. My father in law is stable and headed to rehab but in good hands! I can concentrate on this all weekend which starts tonight for me. I have a 4 10 hour work week. A cold one for me is non alcoholic. At 62 never drank in my life. Don't drink or smoke but I swear a whole lot and have done a lot of that this week at my pool!!!

If you have pool math, go to home screen, gear upper right, scroll to bottom of page, enable share with TFP. We can then see tests and chemical additions.

Given clear pool, slam should be short. Want to shorten it? Test and replace FC every couple hours. Should be a quick slam...looking forward to your recovery.

Prayers for your FIL!!!

Well down to 0 from 11PPM at 11PM last night. Just dumped 2 more gallons in. We will see how much that brings the chlorine back up. Should be a gallon and a half according to the pool calculator. Not supposed to be a lot of sun today so that's a plus. This is way beyond frustrating!!!

That's a good indicator of ammonia.

In any case, the process is the same whether it's ammonia or algae.

Hopefully, you will be able to get this fixed soon.
Yes but with an algae bloom I don't think that anywhere near the amount of chlorine I've already used would be needed. 8 gallons since 5 PM last night!

That's an odd drop of FC overnight. You added two more gallons just over 10 minutes ago. Hopefully you are able to test the FC again now. Stick with that 10 min drill for now to ensure it's holding.

What percentage chlorine are you adding?
