Zip strip removal

The zip strips that were used when my pool was constructed over 40 years ago have become bad enough that they're a danger to barefooted swimmers. I've been removing them with a flathead screwdriver, but it's really slow going mashing it into pieces and sweeping up the pieces. I was wondering if anyone has a better technique?
